I know this should really be on the technical help board, but I need someone, anyone who knows what to do ASAP.

I have a thing called "MS Removal Tool" on another laptop, stopping all operations and preventing me from bringing up anything at all - including antivirus and disc scanning programs.

Any suggestions, guys? It looks vaguely like a Microsoft program but isn't.

No, no, not spyware doctor!

Best with: Spywareblaster or Spybot, both free here: www.filehippo.com.

Get ccleaner as well.

Put your laptop in the microwave.

Boot it in safe mode with networking and download http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free that. It seems to be able to remove anything and everything.

Malwarebytes did the trick for me.

Doddie, if it's the XP Security Virus, then use this page

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-internet-security-2011

It did the trick for me when it landed on my PC recently.....

That was one of the first things I tried - but it won't let me raise anything at all - not even system restore.

I'll start working through the stuff on the sites suggested, guys, and report back.

Many thanks all.

basically, you find the path where the dodgy software is, start the laptop in safe mode and then use DOS commands to get to the folder where it is, and delete it. you may need to rename it first.

Then run all the decent AV and spyware removal software you can find. :)

Hey, when the ol' laptop goes down, I'm liable to panic and do anything.... :greengrin

I DID NOT put the laptop in the microwave. I downloaded the Malwarebytes program and ALL IS WELL.

Thanks all - massive number of files on there which I did NOT want to lose. Freakin' thing just suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

A laptop would look quite cosy in a microwave and I didn't say to switch it on, although it is non essential to put it in the microwave.

Back them up now, either burning to CD or copy them to external hard drive if you have one.

you need to reboot the computer up in safe mode and then it will let you do a system restore. failing that you can do a search for recently added files and delete them, the main programe will be in the internet cache so remember to clear that out too. They're not serious spywares/viruses so don't fear

ah just missed that post where you mentioned all's well

Good stuff.

I read your post last night and was unsure if you were being serious or not. :greengrin

Malwarebytes is probably the best free package around IMO; seems to be able to find and get rid of anything.
