Says on his list of Honours that he was nominated for FIFA World Player of the Year in 2000! The reference link does not work though, so can anyone actually confirm this?

There was an EN article about it at the time - he was nominated as one of the coaches' 3rd choices and therefore qualfied for the annual listing IIRC.

It was one of the FIFA reps from one of the Caribbean Islands voted for him.

This is correct. I think each nation casts one vote towards FIFA World Player of the Year and Russell got a vote from one of the other Carribean Islands I think.

I stand to be corrected!!

Cheers folks. Can anyone confirm that he really did win the T&T Humming Bird Medal Gold (for Sport) in 1996 though? A far more impressive accolade

Think it was the Turks and Caicos Islands who had voted for him, quite right too.

Is that not 2 votes then? ;-)

Correct. It was Charlie Cook - manager of the Turks and Caicos national team at that time.

As an aside, Cook was succeeded by a Scotsman, Paul Crosbie, who player-managed the nation for a few years and drafted in some Scottish mates to play for them in World Cup qualifiers.

Think they were ranked about 200th in the world at that time.

He was joint-33rd, alongside Roy Keane and Dennis Bergkamp.
Love that bit.
