Another eruption from a sub-glacial volcano, sending a vast plume of smoke and pyroclastic material into the air, looking likely to cause travel disruption across Scotland during this week.

Just ****ing terrific, as I'm due to fly from Glasgow to Chicago on Thursday :grr:

Announcement from ATC at 9pm tonight with an update.

What was the script when this happened last time? Was it a case of mostly refunds or did the airlines mostly reschedule?

Surely there are grounds to bomb Iceland? :dunno:

They've caused more disruption and chaos to us in the UK over the past two years than Libya! :greengrin

Hah - I was thinking the same thing in the shower this morning :greengrin

It's irritating as hell not knowing what's happening, but I guess (for me) there are a lot of variables between now and Thursday which could potentially worsen or improve the situation.

As of now, some flights are still leaving over the Atlantic this morning from Glasgow, but others are in a state of limbo.

Is it mostly flights heading over to the US and Ireland that are affected just now?

My Parents are due to fly back from Greece tomorrow night and arrive in Glasgow, i was hoping that might be to their advantage coming from the south East.

No as some flights from london to scotland have been cancelld

I reckon the majority will fly but probably be some cautionary cancellations today and tomorrow while they see how the cloud is made up, i.e. thickness of particles etc and what height it is at.

I'd stay at home mate - last thing you want is ash in your engine :bitchy:

Should be all clear over Harburn though :agree:

I'm encouraged to see that my airline are flying the same route today, leaving at the same time. Hopefully, unless there's a rapid deterioration in conditions, I might actually get to go...

Hopefully the worst is they get diverted to newcastle or Machester, then they can get a train up :agree:

The volcanic ash would almost certainly cause our bombers to crash.

Or the pilots wouldn't be able tosee where they were going, and we'd end up bombing Lanzarote....

And the problem with that is?

For those of you about to get caught up in all that, a cautionary tale....

I was stranded last year (3 extra days in Rio... was such a strain ). I have just, in the last week, received settlement from Air France, after a year of hassle, anger and much French shrugging.

I'm away to Bulgaria with my GF on our first holiday together on Monday. Thankfully i paid it all off thru my Credit Card, and through an ATOL protected company.
I will be gutted if we dont get to go, but i am happy in the knowledge i have protected if things go belly up.

AH HATE ICELAND

Was having a look at the flight level model projections, and come Thursday, it looks quite likely that I might get to fly out.

Keeping everything crossed....

I fly to San Francisco 3 weeks today so hopefully it has passed by then!

Does anyone know what the deal is if the airline cancel your flight? The majority of the money I have put out for the holiday was on the crazily priced flights so I would hate to be paying for nothing at all!

I'm not so sure if the high winds are helping or hindering things

These are the public ones:

I've enjoyed access to the actual model data/outputs through work, which are more detailed, but probably above the level of interest to most folks/media/ATC's.

For notation, where you see the different maps for the same date, it's for different flight levels. For example, where you see FL200, read it as "20000ft".

After all the worries, I got out of Glasgow exactly on time and arrived in Philly 45 minutes ahead of schedule due to a superb tail-wind.

Also made it to Chicago on time. After all of that, our final connection into Toledo was delayed by an hour and a half on account of the big storms which have been battering the Mid West, passing up through Ohio and Michigan.
