Just got a text from a mate saying we are playing Ajax at Easter Road. Anybody else heard anything?

According to their website, they flew to the USA on Friday so doubt it.

I heard we were getting a big team Easter Road in August for a friendly. Someone had said Sunderland but perhaps it's Ajax?

Can't see it being both tbh with the season starting in July. Would have to be one or the other.

The OP's question got answered, pretty much, in post #2. Just having a little bit of fun if that's okay? Nothing directed at the OP.

Can't wait to see some of those direct running, box to box Dutch midfielders. Just the kind of player we need at ER.

Course it's ok. Just tedious and not funny. IMO.

am i missing something?

everyone seemed miffed when we played Barca, waste of time etc etc etc

so why are some getting all excited about, lets be honest here, a once mighty Dutch outfit?

Not for me ta!

Saw rhem play Falkirk a few years back and it was a decent game. Sneijder and Huntelaar played for Ajax, and the game had some meaning.

Playing Barca was like the Harlem Globetrotters had come to town and we were the patsy local side meant to make them look good.

Besides, what Ajax have given to world football is almost on a par with Hibs. Respect where it's due. :greengrin

is that the game falkirk won 2-1

Yes. What made it a good game was the fact that Falkirk were a month ahead of Ajax in pre season preparation. I reckon if the game had been played a couple of weeks later it would have been a different score.

Went to the Barca game and thought it was a good day out, this would let us see how we compare to teams in similar sized countries to us.

Same reason we all get excited when we get friendlies against mid-lower premier league outfits..?

Something new, getting away from the boring mundane of the SPL etc. Plus their fans are quality (Hopefully they bring a fair few over - if we do actually play them that is).

Holland has almost four times the population of Scotland.

Amsterdam has a 50% bigger population than Edinburgh, with only one major football club.

Apart from that, I agree. :greengrin

Not sure they'd bring many fans over, but you never know. Would be a great test though and Ajax are definitely still a 'glamour' name.

My mate is supposed to be getting married that day but he can bugger off if we're playing Ajax!

Pedant Alert - I believe he said similar size countries.

Scotland is 78722 km2 in area whereas The Netherlands is only 41526 km2. :nerd:

We're almost twice as big as the Netherlands so by that logic Hibs should thrash Ajax.

This would be relevant if only homegrown players were used, it now has no relevance what so ever.

I actually thought we were similar in population etc. They are a small country who will produce great footballers whilst Scotland is just in general behind

Even though we got spanked I think it's a pretty cool fact that one of the greatest club sides of all time started under Pep Guardiola against us.

Plus I won a fortune off the handicap betting for that game :aok:

Nope.

But surprise surprise, the really massive huge gigantic team are also planning a friendly with Ajax.

I guess that will put us poor hobos firmly in our place.

Been checking it regularly. They have a friendly on 2nd July, but I can't make out the name of the team. Hopefully at least one Edinburgh club is showing an interest.

Population of 16 million according to Wikipedia.

I've been over to the netherlands fairly regulalrly with work and the occasional footbal trip over the last few years. Biggest difference is the quality of football facilities in almost every village. They invested in grass roots infrastructure and coaching techniques years ago, which is why they produce the players they do.

Oddly though the Eredivisie is only on a par over the piece with the SPL I'd say. Maybe a few more relatively very big clubs than our two (or three, depending in your viewpoint) challenging, but otherwise pretty similar.

Personally, I think it'd be great to play Ajax (although one of the dullest games Ive ever been to was a 0-0 draw in the Chapions league when they played Arsenal in Amsterdam. Even worse than the Hibs 0-0 with the St Johnstone last season. Honestly).

Was that the one in which Yogi stayed in the dug out all game and rarely came out?

I'm not sure, I was too busy stabbing my eyes with a bookies pen and freezing my nuts off to notice. Truly, truly murder.
