Painting tips - do you really need to sand down first?

Ok so the missus is away and I need to get cracking with the painting.

Question is can I just paint over the skirting board (currently white gloss) or so I need to rub down with sand paper? I've got to do the whole flat so its a bit of an epic adventure every little helps so if I can get away with it all the better.

Depends how long you are going to stay in the flat. If you don't provide a 'key' by sanding, the new paint will flake off from the old stuff quicker imo.

Get someone in to do it.

Means you can go to the pub, you get a good job done and the missus will be happy with the good job:greengrin

If a job's worth doing it's worth doing well :agree:. Sand it, hoover up the dust and then wipe the boards with white spirit. Doing it properly first time will take less time overall than you having to redo it when your Mrs comes home and tells you you've botched it :greengrin

I'm a painter and decorator and I would always rub down any woodwork. Make sure that you undercoat too and lightly rub down , or de nib as we call it in the trade, between coats.
