Had the HONOUR of playing on the same park as him rwice - 1950 and 1951 .

His record at ER speaks fo itself

First Hibs manager I remember, and was the standard by which others were judged. An hour or so ago Radio Scotland played an extract from an interview with him from about 18 months ago and he came over as someone who had loved the game, had known how good he and his team were (better than the rest) and still took joy in reliving it. A true legend. RIP.

As Craig Paterson said, the word legend is too often used in the game of football.........Eddie Turnbull ticked every single box. He was not only a Hibs legend, but a Scottish football legend.

With heavy heavy heart I say thank you for the beautiful football memories you gave to so many many people, and thank you for taking the time to share wee moments and tell me your thoughts on the game. Sad day for the club to have lost a great player, a great coach, a great manager but more importantly a great man.

Rest now Eddie, at the ripe old age of 88, you've deserved it

A sad loss to your club and football in general. One of the last greats left from a time when players and fans were rivals who put it behind them after a game and showed respect to each other.

Met him for the first time in April 1979 in Stonehaven after Hibs had drawn 0-0 at Pittodrie. He was getting off the team bus to nip in to a chippie. He came over to me and my mate and said "don't worry lads we will beat them on Wednesday night"

That Wednesday we beat Aberdeen 2-1 at Hampden in the Scottish Cup Semi to get through to the Final against Rangers.

Met him again 3 years ago in Directors Box Lounge at Tynecastle - only a few Hi-bees there - his patter was outstanding

True legend - an honour to have met him & watched his teams

EDDIE TURNBULL "SHAPED A GENERATION OF SCOTTISH FOOTBALL"

Speaking after the sad death of Eddie Turnbull, Scottish Labour Leader Iain Gray said:

"I know Eddie was an inspiration to Hibs players of his era, but also to those who came after him.

"As a lifelong Hibs supporter, I did not see Eddie play, but Turnbull's Tornadoes, the team he managed, were the greatest Hibs side I have had the privilege to watch.

"He shaped a generation of Scottish football and rightly stands as a giant of Easter Road.

"Being the first British player to score in a European club competition means his name will go down in Scottish football history, but those of us with long memories of Easter Road will remember him for the players he inspired and the games his side won.

"My thoughts are with his family at this sad time."

I'm not old enough to have remembered him as a player or even as a manager but I know enough about him to realise that his death is a massive loss to the club.

It's incredibly sad that he has now gone and that we are now left with just one man - Lawrie Reilly - from that brilliant forward line. The saddest thing for me, however, is that we are unlikely to ever see another player who will grace Easter Road, and leave a mark on Hibernian, in quite the same way that Eddie Turnbull did.

Let us not forget that Eddie is one of their legends too - their second manager to win the Scottish Cup. They will come out in force for the last game of the season.

Not old enough to have seen Eddie Turnbull play for Hibs but the Tornadoes was the best Hibs team I have seen, and ever likely to see. They produced many magical moments, including one of the most memorable results in the Club's history.

Too young to know him as a player or manager, but spoke to outside the west before games and more recently had a long chat with him at my uncles (the late willie clark) funeral.

What a man and always had good words for you.. Spoke to him a lot through Willie and what a man he was, at 88 he has lived his life to the full and now hopefully we as a club can get to ER in two weeks time and give the man the send off he deserves! A TRUE legend and wont ever be forgotten by me or any other Hibernian fan.

Was sitting out in the sunshine on Leith Links at the cricket club when this news filtered through to me post match, what a shock.

A tribute at the Aberdeen game is a given, how great it would be if Hibs and Aberdeen fans could stand side by side for this game as in Eddie's era and reminisce but that's probably pushing it.

I think an impeccably observed minute's silence is the very minimum we can expect for that game, with a suitable naming / statue following thereafter.

RIP Eddie.

Just got home from work and my heart sank when i saw this thread, i had no idea.

I wasn't lucky enough to see Eddie play or manage but he was a man Hibs supporters of every generation respected, whether they witnessed his playing and management first hand or, like myself, have been spoon fed stories by parents and grandparents.

Having had a wee look over on kickback it's clear to see he was well respected by Hearts fans also, a real Edinburgh footballing legend.

I read Eddies book a while back and the fondnes he had for the club was clear for all to see, his comments about some of the younger lads not appreciating just how lucky they were to be at a club like Hibs really struck me.

Sadly one of the great footballing forwards lines passes closer to a memory with only Lawrie Reilly left now. They say no one is bigger than the club but it genuinely feels like a part of this great club has died today, a man who saw true success as a player and as manager.

RIP Eddie Turnbull.

RIP Eddie and thanks for the memories. I was lucky enough to be a teenager growing up watching the Tornadoes, yes they had their defensive frailties at times, but when they clicked going forward, nobody could live with them. I think more than anything was the fact that during that period we expected to beat both Celtic and Rangers as a matter of course, we were never afraid of those games, we more than matched those teams and consistently gubbed the pair of them both home and away.

Eddie built into Hibs a winning mentality which we have'nt had for over 25 years, we believed then, somewhat like the Old Firm do now, that we had a right to win, and that we were bloody well going to win. His passion for Hibs, and his undoubted knowledge of the game seemed to get through to the players, and it was a joy to see us play with no fear at all against the best home and away, I seriously doubt if we will see Eddie's like again at Easter Road, or a Hibs team who play their football like that, with total belief in their own ability, and that wee touch of arrogance when they really got into gear.

Thanks again Eddie, I was too young to realsise that it would'nt always be like that, but I know now that I was privileged to have watched them so often, and those memories will live with me forever.

Eddie represented Hibernian at the inugural fundraising event for the Contalmaison Memorial and I was lucky enough to get to spend a good chunk of the afternoon in his company. We talked about the Scottish game - both past and present. His memory was astonishing. I had the temerity to suggest that Jim Black was the weak link of an otherwise superb '70s side. His response included a blow-by-blow account of last-minute tackles in (long-ago) key matches that left me in no doubt that I had defamed Jim and completely misjudged the situation! As I pointed out on JKB, Eddie was kind, funny and very clever - a magnificent footballer in his pomp and a grand old gentleman in his autumn years. Edinburgh should be proud of him and we're all the poorer for his loss.

I remember a couple of years ago bumping into Eddie in Inverleith Park when he was out for a wee wander. His wife was ill at the time, in hospital, and have to say I thought Eddie wasn't looking too great health wise himself. We had a wee laugh about his newly acquired beard !!

Anyway, we stop and blether and the conversation inevitably turns to Hibs, the subject for debate on this occasion was Derek Riordan and his "best position".......Eddie, as always, knew best........"gie the ball to him, play the lad as a striker......he's no a midfielder son, he's a striker".........the girl I was with listened, and as we walked away she said words to the effect "he knows his football".........on hearing that she had just heard the wise words of Ned Turnbull she got all embarrassed and asked if we could go back and get his autograph for her and her brother.

We went back and Eddie duly obliged, signing a wee bit of paper she had in her handbag. However it was the glint in the eye and the wee cheeky smile he had when he was asking her about football, Hibs and whether she was going to the next game. He had a lot on his mind then, his wife being at the forefront, but you would never ever have known. Instead, in a sunny public park, Eddie was then talking to her about the merits (or not as some of the cases proved) of Maka, John Collins and big Rob Jones. The girl I was with hung on every one of his words. She would have been a toddler when Eddie left management, yet she had been brought up knowing who he was and his legend was infamous. Yet still she was in awe of the man. Like a wee child meeting Father Christmas so she was :agree: Then I got one last comment in about "that beard".......

That for me was Eddie Turnbull.
