The minefield that is getting your kids in to school (primary)

Hi Folks,

Newbie parent here so scuse the daft questions.

I've had a look on line for the school were thinking of for my son goes to to see what the deal is with applying to attend the school but didn't find much.

Can anyone assist - when do we need to do this - after they turn 4? Is something sent out from the council or do we apply to the council/schools directly?

Any advice greatfully received :)

I can only speak for west Lothian but would imagine its pretty much the same everywhere. If he is at a council nursery then you will get school applications about the october of his pre school year. If he is at a private nursery you would contact pupil placement here, not sure who it would be elsewhere but edinburgh family services would be my first point of contact if you are in the town. They are who I dealt with to get my west lothian kids into an edinburgh high school. If you dont want him to go to the catchment school for your area you would have to apply to the council dealing with the school. Your nursery should be able to keep you right.

The nursery should tell you the position and give you the forms; in our case they sorted it out for us in january before the sept. Term start. Your nursery should also advise whether your kid is ready to start at 4/5 or could be deferred to start the following year when they might be more confident.

Information here if it's Edinburgh, page also includes a booklet for downloading. Unlike primary schools, nurseries don't have catchment areas but if your child attends the nursery at the primary which is in catchment then they'll keep you right.
