I sold my ipod on gumtree and got all kinds of similar emails trying to scam me. Personally I would only sell it to someone who was willing to meet in person. They could be trying to pay with a stolen credit card via paypal.

aye, they send you the payment awaiting postage, so you don't get the money until they say they have received it.
Complete scam, nigerians normally.
Thanks guys i thought it was scam as i sent a mail back saying i would do it via recorded delivery and not heard anything since. I think i will just put it on ebay

watch out for the same scam on ebay as well.
I've never used gumtree but been using ebay for years. Once I was selling a brand new PDA and the winning bidder, in Nigeria (aye...), sent me a fake email from ebay saying that I should send the item and payment would follow when the item was received. Interesting...
This didn't work (oddly enough) so they then sent me another email from 'ebay' saying that the buyer had paid (obviously this wasn't showing on my ebay or paypal accounts) so I just sold it to the 2nd highest bidder.
Is this the scam you are warning of or is this something different? You send the item then they claim not to have received it and then claim their money back? (I'm recorded delivery/international signed for all the time, every time, after a football shirt I sent to Brazil 'never arrived')

What happens, or did happen as ebay may have changed there policies, you would receive a notice from ebay saying the money had been sent, they same as you always do, and when you check paypal it would show the transfer but it is pending receipt of the item. So basically the money sits in limbo until the buyer says they have received the item. Now obviously the littler felly in nigeria will never admit he got it so you never get the money so his money eventually gets refunded, lots of info online about this scam.
I just emailed him telling him to politely shove a large fruit up his erchi and like you sold to the next bidder.

I see. Occasionally you get the wee '£' sign sort-of half filled-in when payment is 'pending' but nothing goes anywhere until the money is in my PayPal. I feel sorry for people in Nigeria, etc. who do actually want to buy stuff...

Ebay / Paypal often hold money until the buyer recieves item. They will release the money after 21 days or when you recieve POSITIVE feedback. This is normally on new accounts less than 6months old or sellers with low feedback / new to selling. When using paypal ALWAYS send recorded so you have proof otherwise you can easily be scammed. As without proof paypal will vote in buyers favour every time.
