And hardly a peep from the worlds media...one of the 20Cs greatest figures, without a doubt.

Whilst Im not wanting to belittle the achievement by yuri, he was not the first man in space. He was however the first man to survive spaceflight.

We don't know how the first space pioneers were unfortunately, as the soviet union had a habit of covering these things up. It was one of the benefits that the western powers never had, a totalerian state.

The soviets were well ahead of the US on spaceflight. Sadly their rockets were fueled by cosmonaut blood.

The Russian space exploration was fuelled by Soviet blood, but nonetheless, their achievements remain credible. The USA's space exploration was fuelled by access to the moonscape type deserts of Nevada and New Mexico and excellent film making equipment.

Really? Why would he not be considered as one of the 20Cs greatest figures then?

My bad. There is no doubt.
I thought you were doubting media coverage.

Weren't the test pilots like Chuck Yeager officially "in space"?

I think at the time they were I space as defined by what was space at the time. But the definition has changed. I can't remember what definition space was in the 1960's suffice to say even u2 or blackbird pilots could have classed as astronauts.

I think space is around 260'000 ft up.

Oh and no point in fishing about yuri Gagarin, the soviets were the true pioneers of space and he and the cccp space program deserve more credit than they get.

Something else to commemorate the anniversary for interested folk.

Edit: Something else that is generally ignored is that Gagarin actually orbited the globe whereas the US put five men into space before they could get someone into orbit. The first four were just fired up and fell straight back.

A wee bit relevant here, Sky 549, documentary on the first moon landing.
