Is anybody else getting increasingly concerned by the UN's intervention in Ivory Coast?
I know the 2010 elections were classed as "free and fair" and that Ouattara was deemed to have won, but the use of UN military force to remove a dictator from power in order to install a man who has previously operated as a dictator worries me.

Do the regulations governing the UN scrutiny of elections in countries like I.Coast include any mention of intervention if the result is not acted upon?

Not really. I think while I'd like to have an opinion about every event in the world, there's only room in my head for a few at a time. I have no ideas about the Ivory Coast.
To be honest, it's the sort of thing that until there was 24 hour rolling international media news cycle, we'd probably have never heard anything about it.
As a fan of democracy as the most perfect of the imperfect systems of organising civilization, I hope the result of the election is free and fair. If we believe it is and it takes someone to step in to ensure that the result is reflected in the government, then I have to say that I would probably wish for the same if it were my country. Problem is, the UN pick their battles and in doing so, lack consistency: where were they when Ahmedinejad cheated his way back into power in Iran?
As for Outtara's history; I suppose that in an ex-colonised country, there aren't many career politicians going around. Or at least, not many who have not had to cut their teeth by working with some dubious characters. I doubt the Ivory Coast has a tradition of policy wonks becoming politicians in the same way we do - no bad thing. He's possibly a safer pair of hands than someone who is refusing to accept the outcome of an election.

Is it Quattara's previous that worries you or the use of force by the UN/France to finally force out a despot who refused to go and was prepared to re-ignite a civil war that the vote was meant to finally put to bed once and for all?
