Tottenham Hotspur face Real Madrid on Tuesday 5th April 2011 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarter Finals.

The second leg will be played at White Hart Lane on Wednesday 13th April 2011.

The winners of the tie will meet the winners of Barcelona v Shakhtar Donetsk in the Semi-Final.

In 1961, Bill Nicholson instigated Tottenham Hotspur's tradition of playing in an all-white kit for their European matches by telling his players "You look like Real Madrid - now go out there and play like them!"

Spurs and Real Madrid have already met once before in the fourth round (Quarter Finals) of the UEFA Cup in season 1984-85.

Tottenham lost 0-1 at home, which was their first defeat at the Lane in European football since 1961.

I will worry about either if they reach the final.
So long as Man United beat Chelsea and hopefully progress.

David Beckham trained with Spurs when he was a schoolboy but decided to join Manchester United instead.

More recently, Beckham joined Spurs on a loan deal from LA Galaxy but although we wanted him to participate in our matches, insurance problems meant his involvement was limited to training only.Word has it that Beckham will join Tottenham when his contract in California exprires in November.

He was amazing. I loved that Amadeus, Amadeus - Amadeus, Amadeus, Amadeus -Amadeus... was poised for a big comeback before his untimely end. There's a bus shelter in Vienna which has a memorial plaque to him.

I'll second that, always had a liking for Spurs since the Villa & Ardilles days, only other team whose strip I have bought other than the Hibees and Scotlands.

Good luck to Spurs. I really like the way they play attacking football. They are a joy to watch. I am not one of those who has a second (or English) team, but if I had to chose a favourite over the last two seasons it would be spurs. If they could only sort out their defence they could be awesome!

Although we've never played a competitive European game, Spurs & Hibs played in the Coronation Cup at Hampden Park in 1952 and had a string of pre-season friendlies back in the 1950s.

In the 1956-57 season, Spurs played Hibs in the Anglo-Scottish Floodlit Tournament.

What were they for? Climbing all over people as usual, or kicking the ball away?

This is Ray Wilkins worst performance since that game against Hearts at Easter Road, circa September 1996.

Playing Real Madrid away was never going to be a stroll in the park.

We had already lost players like Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate, Alan Hutton, Younes Kaboul, Steven Pienaar and Wilson Palacios to injury before the game.

Then we lost Aaron Lennon to illness as the players walked-out for the match.

Harry then decided to play Gareth Bale and Luka Modric out of position to accomodate Jermaine Jenas (why?).

We conceded a soft early goal then Peter Crouch got himself sent-off (no complaints - he was an idiot) within the first 15 minutes.

The only surprise was that Spurs managed to keep the score down to 0-1 by half-time.

Oh well looks like Barcelona will have to take care of el verdin in the semi final.

Interestingly if Barcelona and Real Madrid both progress to the semi final they will play each other 5 times this season. Twice in the league, twice in the Champions League and in the Copa Del Rey final. It's almost like a far higher quality version of the Celtic/Rangers repeats this season.

What's the script with Lennon? Herd that it's not the first time he's done this and some people on the radio today were questioning his mental state for the big games.

Lennon's saying that he's been ill since Sunday and was prescribed antibiotics by the Spurs medical staff.

Doesn't strike me as the type of player to bottle it.

Do you believe that? Bad, bad show from Spurs if he's been ill since Sunday. He said in the tunnel he had no energy and felt weak. They/he must have know he wasn't fit before they were in the tunnel.

Can't rem the game but they def said on radio he done it before at a cup semi or final.

My understanding is that although Lennon had been sick for a few days, Harry was hoping the treatment he was receiving would be enough to let him play on Tuesday night.

Both Lennon himself and Harry were desperate for the lad to start against Real Madrid, but after the pre-match warm-up session he took a turn for trhe worse and was unable to continue.

Obviously, the disruption to the team's line-up had an effect with Gareth Bale switched to right wing, Luka Modric to the left and Jermaine Jenas playing alongside Sandro in central midfield.

This meant that arguably our two most effective players - Bale & Modric - were playing out of position in order to accomodate Jenas.

With hindsight, it might have been much better for Jenas to have started on the right side of midfield.

Oh well...
