An icon amongst icons. From a time when you needed REAL star quality to be a star. :agree:

Stunning looking person and a better actress than her career might suggest.

I think a certain Mr Burton and a liking for drink proved to be her downfall.

I don't buy into all that at all. They weren't better actors/actresses back then than they are now. Why do people always pine for a greater imagined past that didn't really exist?

She could drink Richard Burton under the table and that was no mean feat.

Think you're reading the post wrong. No mention of her being a better actress, just that she was a star/celebrity because of it? Not like some of the muppets nowadays. Celebs for doing nothing more than appearing on a tv show or being someone's girlfriend.

Star quality as opposed to the dross that clogs up our media guising as 'stars'. Jordan, Vicky Beckham, Paris Hilton, Dick and Dom, twats from Big Brother or the liberal splattering of Cowell***** dripping down our collective dumbed-down consciousness.
Not pining, just recalling.

Nostalgia just isn't what it used to be.

A woman who lived life to the full. She also did a lot to highlight the plight of HIV and AIDS sufferers, at a time when they were treated as social pariahs, she also set up several AIDS foundations.

Nobody with any sense would claim actors were any better in former days. They just seemed to have more star quality because of the way the media treated them.

I would say actors were forced to take on a greater variety of roles though and more of them spent a deal of time on the theatre stage.

I think of Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, Midnight Cowboy and of course Tootsie as someone who took on challenging parts.

I think the "media" was different in the past when there wasn't wall to wall coverage when a personality wen't for a dump. The stars of the day only appeared in public when they had a film to promote, or in Liz Taylor's case when she got married again.

A fantastic performance alongside Jon Voight. One of my all time favourite films.

One shouldn't laugh though - a star from a different era, when celebrity was for those we actually did something to earn it.

It's a fair point but lay off Dick and Dom. They are only surpassed by Trevor and Simon.

There was a photo of her on the web a while back with Michael Jackson, Minnelli and Minnelli's weird husband David Gest where the four of them looked like an undertaker's job-lot.

This was before Minnelli and gest got to be REALLY WEIRD!!!!!!!!!!!!
