3 teams, 33 players, 1 ball, triangular pitch. Could it work?

Thoughts please.

I thought of this a few years back in school, using a nonagon(?) shaped pitch(9 sides) though. Everyone thought it was a stupid idea.

However, I think it was attempted during the fringe festival last year - I haven't been able to find any information as to whether or not it was a success though.

I think it would be interesting if nothing else. :agree:

I can't come up with any reason why it wouldn't work... There would need to be three halves so everyone got a kickoff as well.

Offsides would be very complicated. Corners would be a laugh. I think its a winner.

not radical enough for the SPL.

it would save clubs money on stadium redevelopement. You'd only need to build 3 stands!

Splits into 3 leagues of 10 :agree:

Are you guys joking?

A ref can't handle 2 teams on the pitch, never mind 9! :greengrin

Would be great to have a 12 way royal rumble. And the last player standing wins the league for his team.

The OP may be on to something though. Something like this could prove to be entertaining with some interesting results. :agree:

Even objects that appear to have 2 sides have at least 3. The 3rd side is just extremely narrow.

I think you have confused 2 sided with 2 faced.

Third Lanark were playing this system years ago.

Did the powers-that-be listen?

No they didn't.

I played several times at a summer camp in my school days. Games tend to be close because if one team is getting ahead of the other two, the two gang up against the leaders. It would make the SPL more competitive if Rankgers found themselves up against two sides most weeks, so it might be worth supporting.

The tactical calculations get more complicated if you play it with two balls.

I thought this was going to be a thread about playing with a ball shaped like a pyramid (although that would really have four sides). Imagine the free kicks!!!

Riddle me this:

What happens if team a's forward gets halfed in team b's box by one of team c's enforcers?

Answers on a postcard.

Good question. In my world, team a and team b would each get penalties.

Corners would be too tricky. I say make the pitch round and do away with them. We could make the goals curved which would make the three linesmens job almost impossible to see if the ball crossed the line at goals.

Why would it make any difference? Team a would still receive a penalty. Team b wouldn't be punished as it doesn't matter where the goal is scored, ie team b wouldn't lose any goals and the team c player would be cautioned / sent off.
Pretty much the same as normal football.

I think corners are the best thing about it. You'd have the defending team(s) not knowing which of the two equidistant boxes the corner taker would fire the ball into. So do you gamble and throw your big men into the opponents box, or risk having no-one back to defend your own? A good ambidexterous corner taker would be the most important player on the pitch.

They get to throw the ball now
