The thread title needs little elaboration.

I want to take some English friends for a right good Sunday roast but my experiences of such a lunch in Edinburgh to date have been disappointing.

Any suggestions to help?

Browns in George Street...good portions, trendy vibe and if you go on their website and become a 'freind of Browns' you can get all sorts of deals...35 quid for 2 courses for 2 with a bottle of wine for free...sign up now and you'll get that on sunday...if theres 4 of you it will cost 70 quid including 2 bottles of plonk!

3rd. Went to Browns last month, very tasty and excellent service.

I like the Sheeps Heid in Duddingston as well for a nice Sunday roast

Not sure if it's been confirmed. I know The Clachan in Drymen also claims to be the oldest as well as one or two others.

Back on topic i'd also recommend Browns. decent service, fairly reasonable and the foods good.

I'll second that. Cheap and plentiful.

Toby carvery is a good roast dinner every day of the week not just on a Sunday!

I wonder if people say "I'm going for a Monday roast" on a Monday etc for every day of the week?? :greengrin

And the new one opens in liberton a week tomorrow. Used to be the balmwell. My mate (also a hibby) is the assistant manager there

Toby Carvery is a splendid roast dinner if you like bland rubbish that's been sitting about for ages. Brown's is very good indeed however.

Surely the oldest will be in Gorgie, just that they didn't keep a record of when it was established?

Just what I was thinking about Toby Carvery....if this is the type of market you are looking at you would be much better going to the Lady Nairne which at least cook it fresh for you, don't think either will be really fit the bill here though.

I've always found the best roast dinner at my mum's...dunno if she will be too pleased if you pitch up on Sunday with your entourage though! :greengrin

Thirded on Toby Carvery but I was too polite to say.

I better mention Mrs Beefster's roast chicken dinners here too - chicken, roasters, yorkies, stuffing, veg, gravy kissed by angels and pigs in blankets. It's a thing of beauty.

The Dome do a cracking Sunday Roast, it's a wee bit pricey, though. The Carvery at The George also know the score.

Gadzooks. Pigs in blankets for a regular sunday roast, and not just for Christmas? Can you set an extra place on sunday please?
