Both player challenging for a high ball and Balotelli left his foot in.

Caught the boy about stomach height with his studs. Not pretty.

Mistimed tackle, just like Carragher's the other week. Did Popov burst into tears?

No, he didn't.

But then, I don't think the guy ended up with a massive hole in his leg as a result of Balotelli's challenge.

Still a stonewall red card though.

Don't particularly care either way what happens with Rangers.

If they lose then I'm fine with that, if they win then I'm also fine because, in my opinion, it would be to the benefit of Scottish football.

I know there's loads of people who question that as we had a big debate about the co-efficiency in relation to Rangers a couple of weeks ago but that's my view.

Really not bothered about them.

In some ways, I think it would actually be quite interesting if Rangers got to the final and thousands of them ended up in Dublin for a couple of days. :greengrin

The 6.05pm kick offs currently stand like this;

Manchester City 1-0 Dynamo Kiev (Dynamo Kiev 2-1 up on aggregate)
Paris Saint Germain 1-1 Benfica (Benfica 3-2 up on aggregate)
Spartak Moscow 3-0 Ajax (Spartak Moscow 4-0 up on aggregate)
Zenit St Petersburg 2-0 FC Twente (FC Twente 3-2 up on aggregate)

Apart from the Spartak match, all the other matches are nicely poised with about 15 minutes remaining.

Ha, not watching the game but laughed out loud when I read this on the BBC.

2125: Oh my life. Rangers have been robbed blind - how many referees does it take to see a handball, for God's sake? Utterly shameful officiating. A Steven Naismith header slams against the crossbar inside the six-yard box and from the follow-up, Maurice Edu's shot is clearly handled on the line by Atiba Hutchinson. Should be a red card and a penalty, but nothing is given. It's just laughable.

Yea well tough luck Huns!!

How do you know none of them saw it? Maybe they did and decided it wasn't a pen. Reminded me out the world cup when dallas was refereeing (usa v germany?) and refused a similar pen because it was ball to hand.

The replay showed that the ball was hit against his hand, he couldn't have got it out of the way and that as it wasn't deliberate handball the referee was correct.

I wasn't referring to the previous one and don't recollect if it was right or wrong. just noting it was possible the officials saw the goal line incident and made a judgement rather than missing it completely.

if a player handles on the goal-line thus stopping a goal it shouldnt matter if it was meant or not..

Technically it should still follow the deliberate or not guidance, but you'd expect to be given a penalty. In fact, you'd be raging if it wasn't and crying cheat. Rangers were hard done by, 9 times out of ten that's a penalty.

Strictly speaking you're wrong (a handball must be deliberate for the referee to award a foul) but in practice, you would expect to get a penalty if an opponent handles the ball on the line, irrespective of whether he did it deliberately or not.

If that was Hibs tonight, I'd be fuming.

Whether or not a handball stops a goal or not, one of two conditions must apply before a foul will be awarded, the handball must either be deliberate, or the hand/arm must be in what the referee considers to be an unnatural position. Thats why Dallas was 100% correct to deny the penalty for the USA against Germany in the World Cup Tie, player had his arm right by his side, and was'nt even looking at the ball when the ball spun up and hit his arm, stopping it crossing the line, superb decision

Have to say tonight, while I don't think it was in any way deliberate, I have to say there is a real case for the arm being in an unnatural position, but the replays tend to suggest that the officials, in a very crowded penalty were pretty well all unsighted - which in the end just makes it all the more hilarious !!

That's what i was getting at.. I know it has to be deliberate.. But surely when the you've basically scored for it to be kept out by an illegal part of the body I'd be raging.. It would have made it a very interesting end to the game as the rest of the nights football was gash and needed lit up in some way:agree:

Rangers manager Walter Smith needed his roof repaired, and after a builder went up to have a look at the damage he climbed down and told Walter it would cost £4000 to repair, which the Rangers manager agreed was fair. However, as the builder had to buy tiles he told Walter: “I’ll need two up front and the other two when the job’s done.”

“Two up front?” screamed Walter. “Are you off your head?”

Gutted at the latest co-efficient setback and highly distraught at magnificent English clubs with their high finances and great traditions going out to such small, insignificant teams. Ought to be a law against it.
