View Full Version : Golf: Recommend some blades
I've been off the golf for a while but I'm going to start getting back into it on a regular basis.
It's time for a fresh set of irons and I'm looking to get a second hand set of forged blades as I can't afford a new set.
However, everyone I know plays with shovels so I can't test out their clubs. What I have been lucky enough to do is pick three demonstrators for £5 each and I'll have a knock about with them in a few days. They're the original nike blade, the Mizuno MP33 and the MP32.
I already prefer the feel, weight and lie of the nike even though I haven't hit a ball with it yet but even if I do I don't think I want to judge this purchase simply on hitting a six iron x amount of times. The online reviews seem to say all these clubs are fantastic.
Does anyone have any good or bad experiences of playing with these clubs or can you recommend any other blade that should be considered?

My dad is a Mizuno fan and his irons have been Mizuno's for as long as I can remember. I've tried them a couple of times, but I'm not a huge fan of them in all honesty.
I'd certainly consider a set of Callaway irons, as they're so nice to hit with. Well weighted, easy to swing and a lovely sweet spot to them.
I use the X18's, which are a few years old now I guess, but they're easily the best irons I've ever hit (including a set of Nike's I used to use from time to time).

The X18's aren't, no, but Callaway have some really nice sets of blades out there :agree:

I have agreed to trade my Callaway X20 tour irons (2 years old) in for £120 on a set of Ping G10s. If anyone wants them for £120 be quick as I get the new ones Monday. :aok: American golf will mark them up and probably flog them nearer £160.
Why Blades Peter? You play a bit? Blades usually associated with better players.

I'm currently using the Cleveland CG1 Tour irons.
Really like them, gives you all the touch that you would expect from a blade but are pretty forgiving.
Best advice i can give is don't buy without trying them out, speak to your club pro and get him to recommend based on your game. Get them custom fitted as this makes a huge difference -theres pretty much no one who is exactly the right size/shape/style for a set of 'off the shelf' irons. It might cost a few extra pennies but if your serious out your golf the IMO it's worth it.

Alex you should have tried this lot for selling your clubs very easy to use and they offer a better price than AG, email them the details and they will get back to you within an hour with a no obligation price, they will also arrange pick up for the clubs. http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/models/2900/Callaway_Iron_Set_X-20_Tour.html?Brand=CA&SearchClubType=0&ConditionMin=5&ConditionMax=10&YearFrom=0&YearTo=9999&PriceFrom=0&PriceTo=999&Keyword=X20 tour&SortOrder=0

I'd recommend these Snake Eyes irons. My set was custom fitted and they're without a doubt the best set of irons I've ever owned. The set "graduates" from a cavity back for the low irons to a traditional blade from the seven iron onwards.
Expensive but without a doubt real quality!

Why blades?
Have a look at AP2 from titleist or my personal preference mp53 from mizuno.Inbetween blades and cavity, both forged and much more forgiving than blades....even Rory Mcilroy uses the AP2 for his 2/3 irons!
Why blades?
I'm not that good just now but with a few months practise I reckon I can get back to shooting single figures above par.
My present clubs are blade like but with game improvement features like a slight rear cavity and an offset. I just love the way true blades force you to sharpen up your game...they're unforgiving and that's the point. I'm sure most golfers will agree that there isn't a better feeling in golf than hitting a sweet shot with a blade.
It will be the set I take out to play with when I want a real challenge.
...and they look the business in the bag.:greengrin
Cheers for all the recommendations because I'm probably needing a new cavity backed set too.
