His scoring record is insane, particularly up till arriving at Inter, better than a goal a game!

I can't remember exactly but I think he got a standing ovation from everyone inside Old Trafford when he got subbed.

First of the "Modern" forwards, he had it all - Power, pace, height, skill, could shoot from anywhere with either foot... Brilliant. His record at Inter is still impressive even though he was injured so much!

Would have made Ally McCoist look silly with the record he could have racked up.

Without any exaggeration, one of the greatest to have graced the game. A joy to watch and always seemed to play with a smile on his face.

Is it any wonder? With those teeth, he had real trouble closing his mouth!

:greengrin

He always reminded me of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.

p.s. Is it true that he asked for John Rankin's autograph after the the Squiggler game? :dunno:

My enduring memory will be when, in 2006, after having fitness issues, all the English commentators were scoffing about his size and on he strolls, bang bang, thanks very much, work it all the way right roond yais...sublime talent.

only 34 too what a shame

He is only 34 but was playing first team football from age 16 which is a very long career for a striker.

He's definitely the best striker of his generation and is up there with the best of all time.

At Barca he looked like he was from another planet. Opposing defences just crumbled in front of him - if they went tight, he went past them, if they dropped off he canoned them in from distance, power and effortless close control as well.

Great player and if he hadn't have been so unfortunate with injuries after his move to Inter you have to wonder if he could have been even better, that is quite frightening.

Sublime talent who had every attribute needed to be a top striker and then some.

His close control here, is a joy to behold.

When you consider the injuries he had it's frightening to think of the player he could have been. Sadly in this day and age, a dribbler as he was when he was a youngster, is always going to take some unfair physical punishment and he had to adapt a bit later in his career as well as having to bulk up.

Alongside Messi he'd be the best player of the past 20 years IMO.

I felt the English commentators constantly taking the **** out of him in the '06 World Cup was a disgrace. He still did manage more goals than any of the England golden generation in that tourney as well.

In 1998, he was busy turning CC inside out on the edge of the Scotland box.

Just when it looked like he'd done him for the 4th time, CC put in the best spin tackle I've ever seen to clear the danger.

Ronaldo was good, but no match for Calderwood.

He was different class and untouchable at Barca, I read something even scarier this morning that Messi has 89 goals in his last 90 games for Barca, what is it with them, cant we just get their whole under 17s on loan :faf:
