I'm back up the road at the weekend for my birthday, and me and a few mates are getting together to watch the rugby on Sunday and generally catch up. As there will be burds in attendance, who mostly give not a flying fig about rugby, I need to try and arrange it so that we (or they) have seats, and so I'm thinking of calling up and just reserving a couple of tables in a pub/bar. Nothing fancy, and I don't need an entire "area" or anything like that, just 3 or so tables.

Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations for places that a) allow you to do this b) are located centrally and c) have a few screens up so all ppl who want to watch the Ireland vs France game will be able to do so.

I was thinking of The Queens Arms, which is a nice place if not a bit on the £££££ side. Any other recommendations?

Queens arms is far from expensive mate, I think you may be toiling to get anywhere reserved on rugby day wherever you go. Head into s bar around lunch time then you can have a day of sport with the added bonus of getting a seat!

Are these 'burds' incapable of standing up while talking in a busy pub? Whats the world coming to...

First of all I hope you have a nice birthday!

But forgive me for thinking you’re a tad arrogant thinking you could phone a place where you are unknown and reserve a few tables when most places that cater for that sort of thing will be busy with regular types. I can’t think of anywhere where I’m known that would allow that and I’m known in a few places!!!

My tip would be the Footlights bar, Spittal St. Plenty seats although as said it will probably be busy. Ask for a loyalty card  when you get in and a variety of pints / bottles of wine and other stuff will be a decent bit cheaper. There's good food too.

Across the road is the Chanter, again plenty tables.

If seats are needed you'll have to get there / anywhere early.

The only rugby worth watching is on Saturday night.

I'd try the chanter.

We've got a few tables reserved before for work nights out/birthdays and it's been no bother, they normally throw a few plates of chips in as well. It's never been when the rugby is on so they might say no.

We had tables booked in there for the Holland - Scotland game a couple of years ago, unless all the areas are already booked up there shouldnt be a problem at the Chanter.
