Sad to hear of Don Van Vliet's, aka Captain Beefheart, passing away today.

Got into his stuff during the mid 80's when listening to the John Peel show religiously and despite there being some unlistenable stuff!, he could also write the occasional belters, especially when it came to deep down blues stuff.

Good or bad, was still honest music.

Cheers for the memories (and there were many), Don.

Had all his stuff at one time. I saw him in concert at the Apollo in Glasgow circa 1971.

He was a one-off, an original and managed to make fascinating music while taking the mick out of the rock establishment a la Zappa.

He spawned a million quotable lines and sayings which kept us all in fits through the 70s.

Listening to Tom Ravenscroft, Peel's boy, last night on 6 Music.

"I won't be playing any Beefheart tonight, otherwise I'll just start crying."
