I'm trying to work out why this report was 'kept secret until now', but suddenly it's going to be shared with the suffering public?

I don't doubt that an efficient and running urban light railway system could be an asset to the city - I'm just appalled at the corruption and incompetence displayed by the Council administration in the matter. Why choose the contractors they did? Why the failure to supervise the work more closely? Why all the jolly jaunts to the continent for the TIE people? Why dig holes in Leith when now apparently, it wasn't necessary?

I smell a jobby.

Has anyone looked at Princes Street this week?

There's a ruddy great crack running almost the entire length of the track from the East-End, to the west....this, is of some concern.

Yet more costs. What would be better is someone digging a big, massive **** off hole (or even using one already there such as Princes Street Gardens) and just throwing lots of used £10 notes into it, watching it all blow away in the wind.

It'll serve the people of Edinburgh and the Scottish Taxpayer just as much use as these ****ing trams.

*******s.

Much as I would love our city to be covered by a tram network, I am now prepared to accept that what we are going to end up with will be as much use as a rapid transit system as the ghost train at Cardownie's fun fair in the gardens.

Maybe these straitened times will lead to citizens keeping a much closer eye on what out councillors are up to.

And maybe Edinburgh District Council will go ahead with their plans for a helicopter service between Ocean Terminus and the Zoo - staffed entirely by Vietnamese Pot-bellied Pigs...

Revised business plan backs delayed and over-budget project which won't meet most of its original targets. Who would have predicted that?

Can that be done? It would certainly do wonders for tourism, which is all that the council care about.

All that Edinburgh needed was a rail link to the airport.
Trams = 1 in each direction.

exactly, just link the airport to the train line at the gyle and it would all be sorted. Edinburgh has a good bus service and once in the centre via train you could get anywhere in a matter of minutes via bus.

Biggest cock up this city has made in my lifetime is the trams.

Great idea until we run out of petrol, then people will say: "why didn't we see this coming", "we never plan for anything in this country", somebody should have to pay for this mess" etc.

It's the diddies who have been running the project I object to, not the concept itself. The thing is these people are elected by the citizens of Edinburgh, so they are the biggest diddies of all.

This is generally my position.

Having said that, I quickly became bored with the rammy about the trams as it's so polarised and pointless so my knowledge of "the diddies who have been running the project", and the mistakes they have allegedly made, isn't too expansive.

As far as I can tell, every single project in this country becomes controversial. The trams, the new parliament, the M6 toll road, Trump's golf course, the Millennium Dome, Wembley, the M74 extension etc etc etc.

To me, most of it's just noise and I tire quickly of it.

I do think the trams will change things for the better in Edinburgh and I predict that they'll quickly be appreciated and eventually loved.

I remember the hoo hah about the Parliament, and people saying it was a monstrosity. It seems to me now people appreciate it as one of the great buildings in the city.

People soon find something new to moan about, it's what keeps them going.

I don't. It looks tio me as if the builders walked out on strike five years ago and left it to fall down. It's a horrible building and should be demolished immediately.

:hilarious

I'm loving your indulgence in lack of responsibility.

If you were in charge and you did that, the wailing about the trams would pale into insignificance.

I still think using the south suburban railway would have been a cheaper, easier, quicker better option and would have served more of the city's population than one tram line.

This tram line isn't about that though.

It will save you a few minutes travelling time if you live near the line or it'll be great if you're picky enough not to be happy with the other half a dozen ways of travelling to the airport from the city centre.

A tram network is nice in theory but no matter how nice it is it won't have been worth the hassle or money...regardless of what this secret document contains.
