Goal reminds me of 2 things....

The first being Andy Gray playing it over and over again on his Monday night show and drooling about how it was done with the most wonderful technique.

The second being a former Hibs.net contributor, who even after that goal, was still insisting that Zitelli was a dud.

Incredibly, it didn't win goal of the month, iirc.

Zitelli... What a player... He scored a peach from a tight angle against the arabs too did he not? Almost right at the byline IIRC?

Nope, Gordon Smith picked another goal.

Probably a hun one at that.

Always remember thinking "just hit the ball normally" right before he overhead kicked it right into the onion bag.

Good player.

I remember him doing the damage in Europe while playing in France, a couple of years before he came to ER, I believe both Liverpool (£6 Million) & Rangers (£?) had bids rejected.

He then turns up at ER, surprised how little he gets recognition. Maybe playing in a team with Latapy, Sauzee shifted the spotlight. What a player though.

What was particularly damning wasn't just that this wasn't awarded BBC Scotlands Goal of the Month - but incredibly it WASN'T EVEN IN THE SHORTLIST OF SIX for that month!

I think some crap Ronald de Boer goal against Killie or St Johnstone won it when he shimmied one way, shimmied the other way, not touching the ball and used the space created by fooling the defender to curl it in from about 10 yards. Smith then tried to explain his selection by some bizarre logic that Zitelli's goal wasn't that good but he was fooling no-one.

There was another rumour doing the rounds that as this was a live SKY game the BBC would have to pay SKY everytime the goal was shown which struck me as a load of poppycock.

Looking through the eyes of nostalgia is a funny thing.

I remember Zitelli being a classy player with bags of techincal mastery to spare, if not lazy, slightly arrogant and very greedy.

The huge wage for what we actually got out of him was never comparable.

He was reminisant of a time in the SPL where his level of player could be brought in to warm the bench (on the aforementioned mega wages), then be chucked on for the last twenty minutes to see if a moment of genius could be sprung out of him.

He'd no doubt walk into the current team, but the money splashing SPL of yore isnt really a fair comparison for todays pauper version of the league.

Looking back at that team is depressing when you compare it to what we have had to put up with since Mowbray left (or maybe after about 6 months of Collins time in charge). That team would win the league now or at least be very, very close. Sauzee, Laursen, Mixu, Zitelli, O'Neill, Latapy on their day were sheer class. Even the boo boy of that team, Archie Lovell would stroll into our current team. I remeber that team handing out a few real hammerings and had Celtc under Martin O'neill not been just a cut above in the 00/01 season we could have won THAT cup.
