I wonder what those great warriors for freedom, Reagan, and Thatcher, who desperately wanted the Berlin Wall to be torn down, would say about the erection of this abominable monument to fear and affront to human dignity?

They should have made it longer and higher ?

Yes, we know how they felt about the Berlin wall, but what about this Mexican malarkey?

They would likely be too busy at their respective party fundraisers, watching the cheques pile up from senior executives of spade manufacturing companies.

There's always a winner or a vested interest and profit motive trumps principle every time when the supposed ideological purists of Thatcherism and Reaganomics get into office.

What a random thread. Is there any actual link between Thatcher/Reagan and the barrier?

Having said that, I blame Michael Foot for the Rodney King scandal so I can't really talk.

Yes, because the East Germans built the wall to stop those impoverished West Germans coming in and living off their fabulous welfare system.

Thats not got a lot to do with his post, I'm assuming a fence between america and mexico would be to stop smuggling of drugs and people into america?

If so it is understandable but given that america is the land of the free a bit two faced.

Especially given that almost all americans are immigrants as well...

I did hear that the US government's paying such poor wages to the guys building the fence that they're having to employ illegal Mexican labourers to build it....

Considering that Thatcher was in love with Pinochet and Reagan spent half the 80s supporting terrorist organisations and dictatorships and sponsoring military coups throughout the region I don't think they'd give it much thought.

Neither of them gave a monkey's about the poor and dispossessed of Latin America.

Mrs Thatcher has been out of power for nearly 20 years and Reagan even longer. Let it go people, let it go.

That wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. I always thought it was strange that the US spend so much time and effort trying to stop illegal immigration from Mexico when their economy relies on the cheap labour of their immigrant population.

In reply to the OP, I don't think that there is any comparsion between the Mexican/US wall and the Berlin wall, they have been built for entirely different reasons. Despite Thatcher and Reagan's stance on many issues their opposition to the Berlin wall was correct.

I'm sure this is a very worthy subject and all that but...

About as much as the bigger thread on the public spending strategy of the government.

This forum isn't for football chat though so it's all good.
