A bit of a mess this.
SICK KIDS DELAY (http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/topstories/Sick-Kids-faces-more-delays.6632173.jp)
The whole Scottish Futures Trust idea seems to be a complete mess and has surely impacted capital investment in a wide range of areas.
Is this another example of the SNP saying one thing but ultimately not having an answer when asked what the alternative is?

Why bother paying for a much-needed new hospital for children when you can give everyone free prescriptions that they could afford to pay for.

Does this not fit in with the tory view of private enterprise stepping in and helping to reduce public funding

In their defence, I don't think the SNP have any influence on that. Within their areas of influence, they do seem to have some of their priorities wrong though.

The cost of free prescriptions would barely cover the cost of the architects fees never mind all the cardboard boxes it would take for an application that size.
.
I'll find out the true figure on Mondy unless someone wants to Google it.

Of course, scrapping fully free prescriptions won't pay for a new Sick Kids in one go but it would help. That logic could be used to justify any reckless spending. As I said on the other thread, better targeting of exemptions is the fair way to do it.
Unless my figures are horribly wrong on the other thread, about 5 years of not going ahead with free prescriptions for everyone would pay for a new Sick Kids.

"In England in 2008 88% of prescription items are free of charge"

Thought this might help. :cool2:

Might fit with a Tory view but this is a devolved SNP goverment making this decision.....
Much as I disagree with any charge whatsoever as the NHS should be free to all …
There are some that say a minimal charge of, say, £1 should be made to everyone – no exemptions; no kids; no old folk; no long or even life term illnesses; nothing, nobody.
There were very close to 90m prescriptions issued in Scotland last year.
Even I would have to agree a £1 is neither here nor there, everyone could afford that. It would also do away with the 10s of thousands of folk who get free prescriptions at the moment wasting doctors time queuing up for a 36p pack of paracetamol.

The issue I have with free prescriptions is that the policy serves only to grab headlines and votes for the SNP. They should be focusing on improving frontline healthcare by delivering projects, such as the new Sick Kids, on time and on budget. The free prescription policy has been all over the news but there has been no mention of the obvious mismanagement of capital projects such as the Sick Kids. IMO it is more important to build hospitals and improve care than give away prescriptions when 90% already receive them for free.
This situation is very similar to scapping tolls on the Forth Road bridge. The SNP scrapped the £1 toll but didn't have a coherent plan in place for a replacement bridge. If the SNP want to be a progressive party for the good of Scotland they should stop trying to buy the electorate with gimics and concentrate on improving the services and infrastructure of our country.

Oh dear yet more delays for the re-development of a number of key NHS sites in the Lothians.
Further bad news (http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/Hospital-plans-left-in-critical.6640816.jp)
I find it quite bizzare that despite everyone being well aware of the coming budget cuts that such basic planning as to who and how the nation would pay for these buildings seems beyond our Government.

Other more long-term projects, like a new psychiatric hospital on the Royal Edinburgh site in Morningside, are also shrouded in uncertainty.
Oh dear, Adam seems to be guilty of taking a punt on this story, in May he wrote:
Sources in the health board have confirmed that NHS Lothian now thinks rebuilding the Royal Edinburgh on-site is the best plan for the future.

There is no mystery about the plan to give psychiatric patients a decent hospital, as there has never been any plan.
There is as much chance of us getting a new psychiatric facility at Morningside as there is of Hearts building a new stadium at Tynecastle.
