A friend writes about his recent visit to Edinburgh to see the recent Caps v Panthers clash. He makes some pertinent comments about the lack of marketing for the club and some dire warnings for the near future.

i've not read the link, but I can guess it's probably the very same points raised time and time again on the Capitals forum.

The Capitals will not spend money on much promotional activity - the cash just isn't there.

Understand what you say and that's fair enough but if that's the case then I'd suggest a bleak outcome is most likely, sadly.

I'm no expert but surely not all marketing schemes are relatively that expensive. I'm not in a position to say, but some might propose that the most prevalent poverty is that of a will to do something about the situation.

The problem is the Capitals are backed by one man, Scott Neil. I don't know the full ins and outs of his personal finances, but I just don't think there's enough in the pot. The whole club is run from his wallet, and if he personally doesn't have enough spare cash to spend, then neither does the club.

This isn't a criticism of Scott Neil as he has to work so hard and dip into his own pocket time and again just to keep Elite League hockey going in Edinburgh.

The Caps in recent years have run the following schemes:

Hibs and Hearts season tickets get cheap entry
Two students for £5
Edinburgh Leisure members for £10

...but none of these really worked. The main reason being they had the good ideas, but couldn't\didn't advertise them so the message about these offers never really got out there. I try on Hibs.net and Facebook to raise awareness but much more needs done, but it all once again comes down into Scott Neil reaching into his own pocket to pay for it.

I'm not convinced spending money on promoting the ice hockey would make much of a difference, generally people aren't interested in ice hockey in Edinburgh.

On a seperate note, theres a hockey team (not ice hockey, just regular astroturf hockey) that trains on the Redhall Primary astroturf after my football training on a Tuesday night. I didnt think anybody ever played that, never mind trained!

I think it's far too simplistic to say folk in Edinburgh don't care - it's hard to care about or be interested in something you don't know exists. Avdertising and marketing would make a huge difference.

I wouldn't agree that people dont know it exists. Simplistic or not, I just don't believe there's any demand for an Ice Hockey team in Edinburgh. Supply/Demand is probably the most basic form of economics and in the case of Ice Hockey it's weighted towards supply rather than any demand. It's just not in the culture here.

An extra £1 on tickets in the guarantee that that £1 would be put towards advertising?

How much does it cost to place an ad in our programme. I'm sure that would be a good place to start. Also do they do much with the schools etc...
