I don't refer to them as Yams, I find the term as cringeworthy as that mob calling us 'Hobos.'

Anyway, 'mon the Hibs. We'll pump these fuds on Sunday :agree:

Hearts didn't originally play in maroon shirts. The maroon colour of which they're now so inexplicably proud was the result of an accidentally hot wash, which made the previous colours run. Their original colours were Yellow and Mauve - hence yams (yellow and mauve strips).

It's cryptic. Yam is May backwards, which is the month that the colour maroon was invented, way back in 1866, by a guy who just happened to be a dirty smelly tramp. I don't know the guys name but he had ideas above his station but never achieved anything, was always someone elses fault.

Thats why. maybe.

It's a .net creation that you will never hear in speech at games but maybe in a supermarket vegetable aisle.

THE worst nickname ever IMO.:bitchy:

I much prefer the term '****bo' . It's not big and it's not clever but ii is straight to the point and obvious.:greengrin

AFAIK it comes from a pun on the word 'Jam'

The Jambos came first, the Jams came second and the great crowning glory for Hibs fans came in changing that to Yams!!

Of course, in the full knowledge that yams are just tatties that can be boiled, cooked, chopped and pitted or, in other words:

SMASHED TO SMITHEREENS ON THE FOOTBALL PITCH!!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Long may it continue!!:agree::agree::agree:

Didn't they have their greatest ever month in May? 1986 I believe?

I don't suppose you have any pics or videos of the celebrations, have you?

As much as they are our biggest rivals, I'd be keen to see some footage of this and perhaps even extend my belated congratulations to them for this outstanding achievement.

Anything pink and ugly is a Yam.

Take this photo of Stevie Fulton, for example:

i always thought, and know a few other who thought it was to do with how the hearts mingin strip is of similar colour to when a burd has her time of the month which at school we used to call jams or yams then started calling all the jambos yam fuds ! so guessed that was about it, show how much i know :agree:

But I could be wrong. :cool2:

Luckily enough, I found this picture of the Hearts players discussing where they were going out to that night to celebrate their championship win.

I'm not too clear on how or why the Bobby Ball lookalike in the the dark blue shirt has managed to get in the picture though.

The first time I heard the term was the name given to the remake of a famous film - Silence of the Yams

Hopefully, it will be like that on Sunday too.

Perhaps this short video can throw some light on the subject?
