I'm looking into getting a new electric shower and i've been told i can only get a certain power because my electrics aren't good enough to get a more powerful one. So what do i need to do to my electrics to enable me to get a very powerful shower? Is it because i have an old fuse box?

Probably need a fatter cable run from fuse box to shower.

Yup. We installed a more powerful shower a couple of years back, and found a problem with the cut-out tripping after 2-3 minutes. The electrician ran a heavier cable from the fuse-box to the shower unit, and changed the trip-switch accordingly. No problems since. Not usually a terribly difficult job, either, he said.

What size of cable is connected to the shower and what size of fuse/breaker is it on?

If your fusebox is located a fair bit away from the shower the cable may actually cost more than the shower.

It'll currently be a 6mm cable which supplies the shower I'd imagine - if you're upgrading to a 9.5 or 10.5 kw shower you'll need to upgrade to a 10mm supply.
This should be covered by an RCD main switch as well.

Yup, that's what our man put in. A 10.5 kw job's the least I would want installed in a Scottish winter. Toasty! :greengrin

Depending on different factors a 6mm cable can take 46A (I think but I can check for you tomorrow). A 10.5kw shower takes just over 45A so you'd need a 50A RCBO meaning the 6mms no use.
You might get away with it if using a 9.5kw shower.
How longs the cable run, what type of cable(and do you know if it's PVC or low smoke) and how is it run(clipped through an attic)? If you find out I'll work out if it's any use
Usually it's just recommended running a 10mm and that would cover for all circumstances and if you ever wanted to upgrade your shower.
