A fascinating read TQM, if only for the reason that I have found out that Mark Addy (actor) didn't adopt his name in honour of this Mark Addy.

This guy was famous for saving people from the River Irwell in Salford/Manchester. There is a pub named after him near Granada Studios, which used to serve a massive plate of pate and a baguette for the price of a pint of beer.
