More 1 for the older ones but knowing the history of some of the players in that squad, must have been great to watch them strut their stuff.

That possibly our best ever squad?

We had a great set of players to choose from in the 70s and 80s but never fulfilled our potential. TBH I think we should have done a lot better under Stein - we really had one of the best teams in Europe in the early 80s but twice failed to qualify for the Euros. In Mexico 86, we got a very hard group but still should have beaten 10 man Uruguay in the last game, which would have been enough to qualify for the last 16.

'86 squad pretty decent but no' as good to what was a wealth of talent we had in the 1970s.

I remember (vaguely) Alan Hansen captaining Liverpool to their first double in 1986 - wasn't even in the Scotland WC squad!!!

Imagine that now...

I'd say 74, 78 and 82 were all better than the 86 squad. Close run thing between the 74 and 78 squads but I reckon the 74 guys just shade it.

Used to be a joy watching Scotland in those days.

'74 and '78 were definitely the best squads and the '74 tournament was our best chance to go beyond the first round.

Just ater England won the World Cup Scotland took them apart. There was no fear of World champions then. Not only could we beat them but we could make them look like a very mediochre team indeed. These were the days.

I went to Mexico in 86 and my feeling going out was that we had the players to have a good go at getting out of the "group of death". In the end they underperformed in boiling heat against two good teams (Denmark and West Germany) and one ordinary but tough one (Uruguay).

Overall I think the squad was weaker than in 1982, especially up front - 1982 Archibald, Dalglish, Jordan, Brazil / 1986 Sturrock, Nicholas, MAvennie, Sharp. I don't think not having Hansen weakened the defence (McLeish and Miller were more than capable) and we were not cut apart in any of the games. I do blame Alex Ferguson for falling out (supposedly) with key players who were then missing from the squad and then taking a far too cautious an approach at key moments.

Not sure where that thought comes from :cool2:

I thought we had a stronger squad in 1982 also, and while on paper the 1978 squad was very strong there were probably some legitimate questions about team selection.

Without looking at the actual squads, my recollection of '82 certainly and '86 probably would be that maybe half the squad were Scottish-based and the clear majority of those players were at Aberdeen and Dundee United. For those who are too young to remember the eighties that must be difficult to imagine :greengrin

The English-based players would be in clusters at the likes of Ipswich and Liverpool, who were winning trophies and competing in Europe - again, almost impossible to imagine so many Scots playing a central part in successful English clubs now, though this was obviously a long time before Bosman and a long time before our technical inabilities seemed so pronounced.
