PLEASE PASS ON.

The new telephone 'scam' has arrived.

I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00, or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.

The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!

I asked the guy's name - the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152 0800 0800 152 .

Obviously the fella realized I wasn't believing his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this.

AND HE DID!!
My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again.

Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then.

I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.

He hung up.

Did 1471 & phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognised.

I phoned the police to let them know, I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently but it is escalating.

Their advice was to let as many people know by word of mouth of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please let as many friends & family aware of this.

This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800152 0800 800152 which takes you through to BT Business. The cutting off of the line is very simple , he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable. Obviously, if this scam is real, once they have your credit/debit card details, there is nothing to stop them cleaning out your account.

I got this from a friend in the last half hour, and while I know it isn't football-related, I'd like to pass it on for the sake of anyone who might be taken in - perhaps an elderly neighbour, someone not up to tricks like this?

Cheers the old dear may be convinced of that, as you say if they call 1000 people and 1% fall for it they can get a lot of CC details.

I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him,

He doesn't put the phone down at his end and puts it on mute. When you pick up your phone again, it appears to be disconnected and you can't phone out, because you're still connected to him. He will then redial you, and hey presto your phone is working again. Well thats what I read somewhere else regarding this scam.

Not new ........ but still worth taking notice.

Any official business would never be allowed to cut you off like this and would never ask for CC details.

One of the few scams that has a lot of truth in it.

I had some African phone my house last night claiming to be from Microsoft and spraffing some pish about viruses. I had already read about the scam (they try to get you to go to a website where there's either trojans or viruses waiting for you) so gave him a mouthful of abuse and hung up. The fact that we all use Macs probably would have been a bit of a blow to them too.

Hoax warnings don’t usually scare me, but this one is VERY important.

If someone comes to your front door and says they are conducting a survey and asks you to show them your arse, DO NOT show them your arse. This is a SCAM, they just want to see your arse.

I wish I’d got this yesterday. I feel so stupid and cheap….

Things like this really disgust me because it will be almost exclusively the elderly who will fall for this story and end up getting cleaned out.

I know it's practically impossible to track these people down but if any of them are caught, it should be a 20 year jail sentence.

It is a really wicked thing to try and do to anybody, fortunately the majority who take these calls will 'switched on' to this scam and will tell them where to go but as someone has already said, even if they manage to get 20 elderly people conned into their trick, it could make this evil filth very wealthy indeed.

It really makes you sick to the pit of your stomach to think that your frail parents/grandparents might be their next victim.

I've heard of this one before.

The best advice if you ever have anyone trying to get money over the phone is to hang up and phone the company with a number that you have been given via written correspondance. Then you can confirm whether it was genuine.

I had someone phoning from British Gas phone me asking me for money and threatening me with fees. The worst thing is, I think it was genuine. I never gave them anything but did pay it at a paypoint because I was about 3 weeks overdue :greengrin
