The main maternity ward for the east side of Glasgow is in Bellshill.

I recall thinking that something like 25% of the professional footballers in Scotland were born in Bellshill.

On closer inspection of the squad, we have:

Six west siders - Hart, Rankin, McBride, Brown, McCann and Taggart.
Twelve east siders - Murray, Nish, Riordan, Stevenson, Hanlon, G Smith, Galbraith, Wotherspoon, Welsh, Currie, S Smith and Moyes.

Don't know where Booth is from.

Any scientific research on other birth groupings within the squad?

Due to a bit of jiggery pokery on the part of Glasgow Council in a land grab to access more tax payers, Bellshill formerly of Lanarkshire is now part of what they class Greater Glasgow, this only came into being since 1996. Previously it was in Lanarkshire, there's me thinking land can only move in Lost. As Rankin, Hart and McBride are older than 14, they would technically be Lanarkshire lads. Bellshill hospital was a maternity specialist in the west and given the population numbers through by a number of Scots from all walks of life would have Bellshill stamped on their birth certificate. Bellshill Hospital was demolished in 2003.

Ps, I have Bellshill on my 1972 birth certificate, does that make me a Weegie?

This is correct Bellshil is just the maternity where they were born, McBride is from Hamilton and Rankin is from Airdie, not sure about Hart but i reckon it some hick town by the way he wears his shorts!

Indeed. And its the ability to make such observations - and with conviction - that seperates us from the Yam.

Bellshill may now be part of 'Greater Glasgow', but nobody I know in Bellshill considers themselves Glaswegian.

And if we're going to start objecting to players from Lanarkshire, we're going to have to discount an awful lot of very good players from the past....

Davie Shaw, John Brownlie, and Willie Hamilton for a start.

Jim Herriot and Jim Black of the Tornadoes, too.

And Joe and Gerry Baker might not have been born there, but they grew up from infancy in Larkhall.

There's a little more to the west that just Glasgow....not a lot though

Simples :cool2: Is that your nickname?

Bellshill is closer to the East than West coast. Bellshill is not and never has been Glasgow. It may have been caught in a Council land grab but that's as far as it goes.

So where does the 'weeg' line commence? Is there a parrallel border with the ending of the availability of sauce on chips?

No Rosyth is clearly in Fife. Belshill, Airdrie, Larkhall, Bishopbriggs, Hamilton, Paisley, Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Dumbarton, Greenock, Lenzie, Helensburgh, Coatbridge etc.........these are all collectively in my mind at least captured in the 'weeg'. I feel that once you are broadly beyond Harthill services there should be a sign saying 'You are now entering the Weeg. A soap free zone.'
