I'd be interested in advice as well.

And while I'm here .. any decent (free) software on the go that will allow me to rip my CD's to mp3 and then stick them on a CD .. for playing in the car likes.

You used to be able to do this with windows media player
Not tried it in a while though

Try MP3 Panda. You have to pay something like $29.95 dollars when you register but you get 20$ free.

Tracks are about 15 cents each. Not used it myself but just signed up a minute ago on the advice of a mate a few days ago.
