Just heard that Steve Coppell has resigned from Bristol City. He has been at loads of clubs but has a habit of walking out. Will be interesting to see what happened in this one.

Hot on the heels of Martin O'Neill's walk out on Aston Villa, this is unusual as it is a very bad time in terms of preparation for the new season.

Maybe just devastated at losing the talent that is Paul Hartley........then again maybe not!!

He seemed empty when he left Reading and it looks like he just hasn't got it back. He'll make a good director of football somewhere.

I reckon he's got a bet on this season being a record number of managerial departures :agree:

Decent bloke, too. I met him during his 1st (or maybe it was his 2nd or 3rd) stint at Palace and he was a true gent.

This surprises me that he's 'thrown-in-the-towel'. I'm sure he'll be back at the top echelons of the game. Folk like Coppell can't just walk away from competitive football.

IIRC, he suffers from depression, or at least has in the past. One of the symptoms of the illness is that "empty" feeling that you mention, the lack of enthusiasm mentioned in the reports. It wouldn't surprise me if that's a factor. As with any serious illness, his perspective on the important things in life has probably changed.

I've always thought he was wierd, but he may indeed suffer bouts of depression, which is not laughable.
