View Full Version : Question Driving convictions
I recently got a CU80 (Driving whilst using a hand held mobile device).
Yes I know, silly inconsiderate stupid boy!
So went to the court, paid my £60 fine, got my licence marked with 3 points and left with my tail between my legs.
Q1. Should I tell my insurance?
Q2. How long will my points stay on my licence and when that time passes can I ask for it to be removed.
Thanks

1. You are obliged to tell your Insurance company or it may invalidate your cover.
2. Points are active for three years (i.e count for the totting up procedure) but can't be removed from your licence until 4 years have passed.

And you'll have to pay for the privilege of having them removed from your licence, unless you are changing your address.

Or getting new ones added.:boo hoo:
Thanks guys, do you know if this counts as having a 'criminal record' or us it just on the dvla system? I've read a few conflicting things on different sites.
Reason I'm asking is I'm applying for a disclosure Scotland form through my work and would obviously prefer that to be clean even if it is just a minor driving offence I have! Thanks

My Disclosure Scotland came back with my points on it. It comes under 'Convictions' on the form and makes you look like a right criminal! I had started a new job and the Head Office called me up telling me the disclosure form had come through to them and could I explain my criminal conviction!:grr:

Moi? I'm :shocked:you would even think that of me!
Seriously though, I wouldn't tell porkies about something like this when someone is asking a serious question. I have a Disclosure Scotland form in my house which shows my fine and points.

I am positive it is not a criminal record but a driving offence.

It's a traffic offence, but it might still show up. I got a police certificate for Immigration purposes here (from the UK) and it said 'Minor Traffic Offence'...so it might come up, however I would not worry about it re: work. Best to be honest from the get go and you will gain more respect for it.

Just to point out as an insurance worker you technically don't have to notify your insurers til renewal time. I would however suggest doing it now so you don't forget. Some insurers are treating CU80's like DR10's(drink driving) and refusing to quote people who have them so watch out.

Did you happen to see the ITV programme this week, 'Police Camera Action'? They did a test on a track to see if the guy was worse at driving whilst over the drink/drive limit or using a mobile phone to send and receive texts. The results were pretty similar for both tests which I did find unbelievable.
I've got hands free in my car for taking phone calls but I'll admit to sending the odd text when I've been driving. After watching that programme and seeing the damage you can cause, I'll never send a text again whilst driving.
