So I am moving to America on Sunday and was wondering what to do with my phone. I have a contract with O2 here which has roughly about 6 months go run on it..

I would quite like to keep my phone, so if I took it over and bought an american sim card, would that work in my phone now? (sony Ericsson C905)

Or would I have to just buy an American shanner phone and sim and use that to text back etc?

Muchos help would be appreciated.

On a technical level it will work - check here http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/index.html and select USA to see which networks your phone should pick up depending on your geographic location over there.

To avoid paying outrageous O2 roaming charges, you'll need to get the Subsidy password from them before you head out so you can buy a local SIM, enter that password then use the phone with the Yankee SIM card. As you're on a contract with O2, I don't know if they'd be happy to do that or not.

Be aware that there is a slim chance that the fact that your phone - assuming you got it direct from O2 UK - will have UK software inside, and therefore you may encounter compatibility issues for certain network-supported features over there, namely MMS and mobile internet.

Calling and simple texting should be fine though.

Hmm, I have been given a guestlist and it kept open till 1.30 for us so it's a strong possibility. And if your going to be there??? Could have just sealed the deal.

I was thinking that but what if I want to keep my phone I have now? Can I not just stick a new American sim into it and just off I go? Or is it not as easy as that?

Okay, so back to the phones..

I am here now, been to a few stores today and they said that at&t were the only American phone company that did sim cards, and I couldn't sign up for a monthly 'contract', if you will, as I don't have a social security number.

Does anyone know anything that I could do or how to get a sim that would work in my current UK phone (Sony Ericsson C905)?

Thanks for the help so far.
