Hi all
recently lost my job:boo hoo: and the wife reckons I should think about becoming a driving instructor. I have heard stuff about "pay as you train" but wondered if anyone who has done it can give me their lowdown on how much they spent getting trained, how quickly they started earning and whether they love it or wished they had not done it:greengrin

I think it was "Red L" or something that was featured on Watchdog recently when they were highlighted for offering a 6 month interest free loan while you were doing instructor training to pay for the costs of your training and making out that you'd be qualified and earning by that time. I can't remember the exact ins and outs but basically, when people tried to book training lessons, they were only few and far between so basically it wasn't possible to pass your training within the interest free period. As I say, that's what I can rememer from it so don't quote me. You could probably look it up on the watchdog website for the full story.:agree:

No need to sign up for such nonsense I would say.

The only thing I would say id that you should do the sums here first and then work out if being a driving instructor would give you the income you need.

I see plenty of adverts for lessons at or even under £20 an hour.. Now £20 an hour might sound like a great income but considering the overheads (not least the fuel!) I think there would need to be plenty of hours put in to get a good wage out of it....which of course means you need lots of customers.

Red quote 30k but that works out at £576 EVERY week of the year which at 5 days a week is £115 which is as good as 6 jobs a day...so that's a mimimum of 6 people every day which considering booking and time between jobs must equate to at least 8 or 9 hours in the car every day of the working week of every week of the year and tha't BEFORE any costs.

There is plenty of instructors out there so ther eis obviously some sort of living to be made out of it but I would suggest it has limited updside in terms of future increases in income and is far from a get rich quick scheme although the job will surely suit some people....you just have to decide if that's you.

I know someone who has recently (about 1 1/2 years ago) become a driving Instructor, I'll PM you his details, hopefully he will be able to give you the info you require.

I've been doing this for a while - I've sent you a PM if you want to discuss it.

As its been brought up - I'm at the point of taking my final exam but I want to fit in a bit more practice teaching before I take the test (the tests are not cheap so I would like to pass first time :greengrin).

If anyone knows anyone looking for some free lessons - then I might be able to take on a few more.

You also need to consider how much you value your social life and how much of your income are you willing to sacrifice to watch Hibs.

Most people want driving lessons in the evenings and weekends as they have school, university or work 9 - 5.

This also means that you work long evenings in the summer and all weekend in winter.
