There are no direct flights to Maribor.

Two nearest airports are

Graz (Austria) Ryanair fly from London Stansted to Graz, Maribor is about 90 minutes drive from Graz

Ljubljana (Slovenia) Easyjet fly London Stansted to Ljubljana, Maribor is about a 2 hour drive from Ljubljana. Trains and busses run between Ljubljana and Maribor.

Because of the short notice the price of flights are a lot more expensive than I normally pay.

Ryanair fly from Edinburgh and Prestwick to Stansted

Easyjet fly Edinburgh to Stansted.

I would normally be looking at £110 - £120 for the entire return journey.

A quick check on the Ryanair website shows that a flight to Graz from Stanstead is approx £210. Thats departing on the Wednesday and coming back on the friday.

Expensive indeed. Especially for that joke company. And that is not even taken into account all the nonsense they add on top of that and the price of your journey down to Stanstead. Hmm...

I've had a quick look at flights for both Maribor and Szekesfehervar, Maribor (Graz) is £358.01 with some foreign mob and Szekesfehervar is £331.97 with BA.

Pretty steep already!

Don't know if it's in any way worth considering but for those under 25 a 5 day Europe-wide rail pass costs £129. Not valid in the UK though so you'd have to factor in the additional cost of getting overseas to begin with.

I had a quick look and think you could do the round trip for about £275 (wed-fri)

Big issue is that the flight gets you back into stanstead at about 8.15 pm and the last flights back to edinburgh or glasgow are about 8.50pm which is too tight time wise.

Flights to ljubjana from stansted £178.99 going on the wed and back on the friday although coming back is arriving in london at 2010 so would have to get a flight back up here. Just get the train up from ljubjana to maribor. Could be an option

Three and a half hours on the train from Zagreb could be an option.

Leave Edinburgh at 7am and you can be in Maribor the morning of the following day - very tempting! Still, the cost of Edinburgh to Paris is still quite steep - I assume it's not valid on Eurostar?
