Since 1966 England have only beaten five teams in the knockout stages of the World Cup - Belgium, Cameroon, Denmark, Paraguay and Ecuador.

Not a very impressive record.

Apparently they have never beaten any "fancied" at any other world cup other than 1966.

Heard the other day that England have never beaten a "current" holder at a world cup. They said in 7 attempts, but I can't think of them all.

Or, to put it another way, apart from a fortunate win over Cameroon, England have never beaten anyone in the top 30 of FIFA world rankings in the knock-out stages.

This will be a useful fact to bring out next time you hear a Scottish commentator suggest we could go all the way in the competition. :agree:

English supporters view games against Germany as their big derby game.

Germany have won 6 trophies and reached 13 major finals to England's 1.

Since 1966 England have played Germany 20 times with England winning 5 and Germany winning 13.

All in all, it is fair to say that Germany has England tucked away in their back pocket.

Denmark must have been up there in 2002!?! And I bet Ecuador weren't far away in 2006 either.

If you laid all the English and other crawling commentators end to end they would reach 3 miles up the M1. The queue of volunteers to run them over with a tank would fill the rest of the motorway!

Apparently Scotland were the only team to go unbeaten at the 1974 world cup! :greengrin

I knew our rating was poor but below Gabon is a true embarrassment. And England - 8th WTF?
