Now that we are all in the same boat, I think we should get right behind the lads in future!

Anyway .. hope yer spewing big style...GIRFUY ...
Actually, I'm happy.. Now the English media circus can take down its tent. I predicted England would get gubbed today, and was quite happily playing cricket in Dunfermline during the match!!
England could do with taking a note out of Scotland's book.. Going back to square one. Get shot of this not-golden generation and overrated / over-paid foreign coaches!
May the real festival of football commence!

I didn't say I knew there was someone in there.
And you might think you oughta, but I don't think you will!
Jeez, I could do this all day if I didn't have to go to the pub at 11 to bag the best seat in front of the big screen, the one reserved for the part time Box head.
And after all this fascinating debate, I still don't understand why "We don't cheer on our own constituent country"
Hmmm ... maybe you could explain to me why I could never cheer on a constituent club of Edinburgh in any competition. It's ABHoMFC for me, really. Or explain why you would support them? Or, explain why you wouldn't support them but would support our national rivals?

I don't know how to cheer on England...there is nothing to cheer about...much more to cheer about being Scottish...maybe the english should join us?

Question: now that the World Cup is over, do we
a) keep supporting England?
b) go back to supporting Scotland?
c) support all 'constituent countries' in the Euro qualifiers, and hope for a draw when England play Wales?
d) accept that some people get caught up in talking a load of slavering pish in their desire to be part of a big global media event their own country sadly didn't qualify for?

Why Don't We Cheer On Our Own Constituent Country?
Being British, I support England, NI, Wales and Scotland in whatever events they may be participating..
What I can't get my head around is why we still have to continue with bigoted opinions towards our own nations in general.
This isn't just directed at Scottish folk but at the English as well, but moreso Scotland because of the current situation with one being in the World Cup.
So, discuss, why do you personally have something against the English?

I'm going to break with my normal thoughts, and say yes we should support England, i'm certainly going to get right behind them now, for the rest of this campaign.

 Admittedly its a pretty big thread Clerrie but if you read post number 238 above, you might conclude that I probably do not support Engerlund either.
The rest of my post is simply a bit of banter with Filled Rolls.............

Apologies for that then.
I wish the OP would answer the question, though ...

Stuart,
To try and answer your original question without letting fervour get in my way...
If I supported Scotland then I guess that is who I would support, i.e. I would not support another national team e.g. England.
England: is part of Great Britain and part of the United Kingdom
Northern Ireland: is part of the United Kingdom but GB
Scotland: is part of Great Britain and part of the United Kingdom
Wales: is part of Great Britain and part of the United Kingdom
Great Britain itself is a kingdom established in 1707, so in effect GB is a collection of formerly independent countries i.e. England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom is GB plus Northern Ireland, and has been since 1922. Although the countries on the mainland of Britain are part of GB and UK they established their own national football teams in the latter part of the 19th Century. In effect, from the point of view of the game of football, these countries have been independent since then in terms of that sport. IMHO there is no point in having a national team for each of the parts of the GB/UK if you wish to apply the logic that we should support any that get through to championship finals. With such an argument you'd be as well having a UK or GB team.
If I supported Scotland I can see no logic in supporting England over any other team that reached South Africa unless say for example my favourite Hibs player was in the England team. That would be a reason I could think of for supporting England. For the duration I was backing Côte d'Ivoire as big Sol was selected for the final 23 to travel to the games.
I would not support England with the exception of the above clause about a Hibee being in the squad and my own national team not being in the competition. I have always supported the Republic of Ireland and I am sure I am not the only person on .net to do so. That's a choice I made a long time ago based on my where my forefathers came from.
Stuart the the thing is that rightly or wrongly a very large number of people in Scotland either dislike or hate England, the English and everything associated with the country. Why? Well for starters just look back in history to the wars between the two countries and various atrocities carried out. Also due to the fact that a lot of displaced Irish folk came to Scotland in several waves starting with the "Plantations" in the 1600s, you have a large number of people like me whose ancestry is in Ireland but whose families were evicted from their land in Ireland by English soldiers, that land being given to Scottish Protestants loyal to the English Crown etc. etc. I once worked with a guy who was a staunch Loyalist / Unionist and a Rangers fan. He supported England in the World Cup. He's the only Scottish person I know who does.
The thing that worries me above all else is the growing tide of "you must support England or you are a racist/bigot etc." people. I found the actions of Grampian Police very worrying in that respect. How many English people would support Scotland or Wales if it was them in the World Cup and not England. Not that many IMHO.

:agree:
Some of us Scots need to chill out and realise that within a British media network we're always going to hear a lot more about England due to it's sheer size in comparison to the others.
I certainly won't be wishing any sort of defeat on them. Whatever they do wont effect me or my nation so why waste energy on negative thoughts? Those who latch onto nations, like in that STV ad or those who support anyone but England are wasting their time...they should be using their energy to analyse what is wrong with our game instead of groryhunting or indulging in schadenfreude.
That my friend is the most sensible thing I have seen on this forum.

I would tend to agree with you, Peter. Scottish football needs to put its own house in order before anything else.
However, I would say that I'm still VERY happy that we won't be seeing that monumentally pretentious and irritating Carlsberg ad again, and I'm also happy that the better team won yesterday, albeit in tendentious and controversial circumstances.
And my settled conviction that commentators should be commentators and not cheerleaders extends to ALL of them - not just Tyldesley and Motson and their ilk. Scots cheerleaders too.

Wonder what happens when only one Scandinavian country qualifies? Do they all get behind that one representative. I know there are differences but its the closest example I could think of.
