Scotland v Holland 1978. For a few tantalising minutes it looked like we might achieve the impossible and qualify for the next stage. And there was THAT goal.

Of the world cup games I have watched:

Germany v Boliva -1994 - 1st ever world cup game :greengrin
Italy v Nigeria - L16 194 - Baggio turning the game on its head
Brazil v Holland - QF 1994
Scotland v Brazil - 1st Scotland game and great build up, getting home from school to watch build up, Collins scoring...
Argentina v Serbia - 2006 - fantastic football from Argentina including that Cambiasso goal.

Games that have only seen the highlights off.... too many to choose from

1982 and 1970 world cups looked the greatest/most entertaining though.

1954 Hungray team looked pretty leathal too.

Would agree, Brazil were brilliant.

Was at the Scotland Brazil game in 82 and although we lost 4-1 the atmosphere was superb, especially following Narey's "toe poke", so that's one of my favourite world cup games.

I seem to recall enjoying Bulgaria 2-1 Germany in 1994. Classic upset :agree:

Brazil v Scotland in 1998 wasnt bad either, mostly.

Was there a Romania v Sweden in 94 that was 4-3 or something like that too?

Best game outside the WC would be Spain 4 -3 Yugoslavia in Euro 2000 - 2 injury time goals, amazing finish. That was a good tournament- maybe the last good one.

Narey tried to out-Brazil, Brazil and simply served to annoy them and they decided to start playing. Did we touch the ball after that?

Scotland has only ever won 4 games in the World Cup finals:

2-0 v. Zaire in 1974
3-2 v. Holland in 1978
5-2 v. New Zeland in 1982
2-1 v. Sweden in 1990

I was at the Zaire and New Zealand games, so they stand out for me for purely patriotic reasons.

The win against Holland was our best ever performance, but it is also one of the best
games I've seen in the World Cup.

Scotland qualified for 5 consecutive finals between 1974 and 1990 and were the first team to achieve
this. Others had obviously played in 5 consecutive finals, but none of them had had to come through
5 qualifying tournaments to do it.

Overall, the best game I've seen on TV would be the 1970 final between Italy and Brazil.

For the quality of football, excitement and sheer drama, Italy v Brazil in 1982 was the best ever in my book.

Brazil, who had been utterly brilliant up to this point, only needed a draw to qualify for the semi-finals.
Italy had been dire. They DREW their three "first group" games (against Peru, Poland and Cameroon), squeezed past Argentina in a brutal "second group" match, with Gentile booting Maradona all round the pitch.
Paolo Rossi, just restored to the team after being banned over a bribes scandal, had failed to score in four games, and the Italian Press were screaming for him to be dropped.
So they had no chance against Junior, Dirceu, Socrates, Eder and so on. Right? :bitchy:

Rossi scored a hat-trick, and 40-year-old keeper Dino Zoff saved a Socrates header on the line in the last minute. It was brilliant stuff from first minute to last. Italy 3, Brazil 2.
Then Italy 2 (Rossi 2), Poland 0 in the semi final.
And Italy 3 (Rossi, Tardelli, Altobelli), Germany 1 in the final.

Great memories.

This and all the other posts about this game sum it up.

Fantastic game of football featuring two brilliant sides. Italy had one of those all-time great defences, which shouldn't overshadow how good they were going forward. Brazil had one of the all-time great midfields, which shouldn't overshadow how good they were elsewhere.

We saw the match in 1982-telly which really was a different sort of picture from what we are used to now and only added to the occasion.

The game was a sheer spectacle between the teams who we know to be the two greatest sides in World Cup football and an utter joy to watch.

And having said all that :greengrin, all credit to Juice-Terry, France v West Germany in the semi-final was an absolute cracker of a game, some footage here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GqEheQCH5k&feature=related)

Great goals, especially Fischer's, the unforgettable assault on Battiston by Schumacher, one of the most gripping extra times ever and an enthralling penalty shoot-out. Fantastic match.

Outstanding World Cup in general - but those four teams were able to offer us Zico, Platini, Gentile and Rummenigge amongst many, many others.

That was the best match that I've seen, too.

IIRC, the ref played about 10 minutes of injury time and Spain nicked 2 goals. The Slavs thought that they were eliminated, but the result of the other group match went in their favour and they duly qualified.

As an aside, I was speaking to Alan Green of BBC 5 Live a couple of years ago and I commented that he had commentated on the best match that I'd ever seen (I had the TV turned down and listened to the radio commentary. Probably Motson or someone else grating my ears). It is also his 'most memorable match' and he's seen a lot more than most!

Scotland 2 v Zaire 0 in 1974. I'm bursting with an 11 year old's excitement now just typing it.
Something exotic about your first WC match being against a country you had never heard of never mind place on the map.

In the same section 0 - 0 v Brazil comes a good second to it, but 1 - 1 v Yugoslavia was amongst the saddest of my then puff
Between that and Hadjuk Split the Slavs were becoming a focus point of intense dislike round about then......

Scotland 2-1 Sweden in 1990.
I remember this game was on a Saturday night and the boozers were rocking afterwards.
Coming straight after the Costa Rica farce it was a fantastic game to put us back in the tournament.
