It's finally here! Game 1 of the 2010 World Cup is about to kick off in Soccer City, Jo'burg.

South Africa hosting Mexico.

What a racket - brilliant to see all the South Africa players singing and dancing in the tunnel.

Bring it on!

I've been to about 25 games in Africa so I'm 'used' to the noise but it doesn't get any less irritating, nor has it any place in a global tournament.

If anything, I feel a wee bit embarrassed about the message the vuvuzela gives to the world about Africa.

good first 5 mins by mexico and should have scored...not enjoying it now as those ruddy horns are as i expected spoiling it:grr::grr:...its just a dreadfull drone...not as if its in response to whats happening...at least a crowd roar or other instruments add to the atmosphere by getting louder when good chance etc...these things take away from the peaks and troughs of a game

I'd say the horns you get at cup finals are more annoying than them. Like i stated in my last post i'd much rather do without them but it's what they use at football matches in Africa so i accept that.

There must be a way Tv broadcasters can filter that high drone out. Our just let us hear the commentary with a the crowd noise much lower. Cant stand that bloody drone.

Those cup final horns are annoying for, what, five minutes a game? Usually before kick off? I've seen people threaten to stick them where the sun don't shine if it's not given a rest.

This isn't an African tournament though. FIFA should stop these eejits from embarrassing themselves. How is it that only Africans think this drone represents 'support' and 'atmosphere'?

I agree with what your saying, it ruins the atmosphere cause theres no chanting.

They are much better getting rid of them for good but i don't think it's worth making a deal about.

Exactly. There's absolutely no relationship between the noise and what's going on on the field. They're actually drowning out any real crowd response.

Already I'm hoping South Africa go out as early as possible. I'd HATE to be in that stadium.

I'm afraid Lofari's right - we're going to get this ignorant racket to some degree all the way through the tournament.

There must be a way for the TV channels to filter out the noise and accentuate the commentary.

But then I'm not sure what the difference is exactly between the racket of ignorant mindless trumpets on the one hand, and Motson and Tyldesley and Co. on the other....

Even (or, perhaps, 'especially'?) as an Englishman, I find Motson et al utterly cringeworthy, especially as you know that within 30 sens of tomorrow's evening game, some twat is going to mention 1966.

However, there's loads of ways to filter out this vuvuzela racket and I would be surprised if ITV have not had many thousands of complaints by the end of half time.

Why, would you rather there was silence often assocated with the commercialism of "global tournamnets." It may not be everyones preference but at least some part of SA fan culture in the vuvuzela actually getting to the tournament, which often is not the case at these events now.

As I have posted before some of the attittudes above reminiscent of the dimwit Hibs fans who lobbied Board to ban Livingston drummer a few years ago, that the Board responded to these fools truly made me ashamed to be a Hibs fan.

Right now, YES.

I'm hoping that at the games that don't involve African teams we may be able to hear a more 'normal' (in European/South American terms) crowd reaction.

The absolution in your assertion that I would rather silence because I don't like the vuvuzela... I would rather singing, chanting, clapping, Serie A-style choreographed fans' displays. I'm old fashioned like that.

The Livi drummer isn't like-for-like, that's a silly argument.

FWIW I had no real problem with the Livi drummer, except that he'll always be connected in my mind with THAT League Cup Final and an appalling 3-0 defeat at ER in Mowbray's day.

I would also suggest that a drummer at ER might be one way of stimulating our support into actually making a noise at matches - other than the obligatory "See you, X, you're *****!" sort of stuff some of us do so well.

But this is just a pure pain in the tonsils.

The South African players and supporters are absolutely fantastic and knowing of their passion and excitement and what this means to the country I want their campaign, as short or long as it may be, to be a memorable one.
