I am more nostalgiac about 86 than the rest - it's the first world cup I really watched, there were lots of good games, lots of memorable players, great goals, plus it was in Mexico which seems to have a bit of magic about it. So yes, it is my favourite.

:agree:Its my favourite as well, although USA 94 comes close. Lots of underdogs and great individual performances in 94. (Hagi, Stoichkov, Bulgaria getting to the semis). Crap final though.

My favourite as well probably because I went, Scotland were poor (what else), apart from a cracking goal from WGS but it was a brilliant country to visit. The local Mexicans could not have been any more welcoming, Sol beer was between 10p - 30p a bottle depending on which boozer you went to and evryone got on great with the Germans who were staying in the same town. Hope it goes back there again.

Certainly one of the most memorable world cups, although I think the quality is 1982 were perhaps a little higher ( Maradona aside!)

Who can ever forget Harald Schumacher's kung-fu tackle in the semi? Ouch!

Just realised that 'tackle' was in the 1982 world cup, d'oh!

I was only 6 at the time but it made me fall in love with football.

Michael Laudrup, Enzo Francescoli, Maradona. My first World Cup sticker album. Maradona's goals v England. I get all misty eyed just thinking about it :greengrin

Maradona factor apart, I recall the '86 World Cup as a disappointing one. Argentina '78 is the first World Cup I remember (with fondness) but Spain '82 remains my favourite. It had the two most visually pleasing international sides I think I've ever seen: Brazil and France.

Although I enjoy them I don't think any subsequent World Cup has come close in terms of excitement for me - probably something to do with the novelty factor when you're younger.

Think we all mind our first World Cup as being the best one. Maybe it's solely due to nostalgia but I mind just how exciting it was in 86, even the months leading up to it and collecting the Panini stickers etc.

Cos it was in Mexico and some games were in the middle of the night my folks rented a video recorder from Visionhire in Musselburgh High Street so I could see most of them. I'll never forget the disappointment when my mum woke me up to tell me that we'd lost to Denmark.
