Pronounciation

We have been having a discussion over the last days as to how you pronounce Hibernian.

I pronounce it "HIBernian" and someone else pronounces it as "Highbernian". You then have the singular HIBBY or HIBBAE HIBEE but i'll do a separate post for these.

How do you pronounce it?

I always think HIBbys is what non-Hibs fans call us.

I liked the way Blobby always referred to us as HIBernian.

I don't suppose it makes much difference but I do know it irks some who hear it pronounced as HIGHBernian.

Its both for me...coming from the Isle of Man when uneducated people in the field of football havent heard of hibs, I will call them HIGHbernian...however when talking to other fans, or friends its simply hibs or the hibees

My Oxford Concise says adj. of or concerning Ireland is HIGH-bernian.

But then again, the correct dictionary pronounciation of Celtic is Keltic, not Seltic, so maybe football teams just make up their own rules:greengrin

I think most songs are pronounced HIGHbernian Highbees etc but is this only because any other pronunciation would not fit?

Is it due to this that we now have different ways of saying our name?

Can any of our more mature posters shed any light on the pronunciation prior to modern day songs?

Hibbies. Hibbys means a belonging of one Hibernian supporter (e.g the hibby's football). Hibbies is just the being of more than one Hibernian supporter, in this case, your mates.:wink:

I know exactly what you mean Dawn. If there's one thing that's always nagged at me, it's that I was just too young to go and see Hibs win the Skol Cup in 91. I remember my dad sitting down with me to watch the video, just before he took me to my first Hibs game and although I was only 5 or 6, it left a lasting impression.

I voted for "High" but on second thoughts I agree with a previous poster who says both. :cool2:

I think it depends who I'm talking to or whereabouts in the sentence the name is appearing. On reflection I'd actually say HIB-ernian = 75% and HIGH-bernian = 25% :greengrin

Funny, whenever I've sung "Hibernian, Give us a Goal" from the Turnbulls Tornadoes single I've always sang HIBernian. But I've just listened to it and they sang HIGHbernian. It's not as if I've not listened to it much as I bought the single when it first came out! There were a few Hibbys in the team that recorded it so was there a general consensus then how it was to be pronounced in the song :dunno:
Must admit, it's normally been HIBernian for me but can't say I've not pronounced it HIGHbernian.

Never actually thought about it before - I think both are correct :thumbsup:

I've always said HIGHbernian, and HIBby, I think HIGHbernian is the original pronunciation as Hibernia is pronounced HIGHbernia and we don't say animals HIBernate for the winter either. :greengrin
