He's got to be thrown out the sport. The "we thought it was the mafia" doesn't wash considering the conversation started in an Edinburgh hotel.

Nope. All professional sports are subject to corruption so some extent.
Where there is money and betting involved, there are cheats and thieves.
Boxing and snooker must be the easiest sports to fix, given that only one person need be involved.

Oh dear - bye bye to one of the greatest players to ever pick up a cue.
Pretty shameless sting, but nonetheless unacceptable and corrupt behaviour from Higgins.

Genuine question here.... Is there any suggestion John Higgins has been involved in this kind of thing before?
Or did the NOTW just phone up a load of snooker players agents/managers and see who sounded keen?
If the latter is true then, whilst not condoning Higgins' actions, it seems a pretty low piece of 'journalism' bordering on entrapment. They have essentially dangled the bait of £260 000 and when he has bitten they have branded him a cheat. He is a cheat for accepting the offer but it's shockingly poor behaviour from the newspaper.

Apparently someone 'in the game' approached the NOTW and said that Higgins and his agent may be involved in this sort of thing.

Don't papers like NOTW do this kind of thing all the time though?

They do. Thats why i'm interested. I assume they get tip offs that someone might be a bit dodgy as they did with the Joe Calzaghe cocaine story.
Just had an image in my head of a dedicated team employed to phone agents and managers and try and find someone keen to get involved in a scam.
In other news reported in todays NOTW apparently Amir Khan likes texting girls and trying to have sex with them. Men these days eh?

It seems when Higgins heard this deal was to do with match fixing he thought he was dealing with the Russian Mafia and just agreed so he could leave the meeting.
Truth or Lies it's over for him

I heard him say that too. What a load of hooey:bitchy:
If you thought you were in a meeting with the Russian mafia why not just say 'no ta' politely and walk away? Or better still, not meet them in the first place.

NOTW said they met a few times in Edinburgh before Kiev so they had plenty of chances to get out of it before flying away to Kiev.

Sounds plausible:agree: I'd have more respect for Higgins if he apologised, retired with his millions and just kept quiet.

Sleazy in the extreme.

I don't understand it. Surely he has made enough money without the need to take bribes to throw a frame?
If the deal was by a real "business man" and it went ahead, where does the person making the bribe make their money back plus profit? you just can't go into a Ladbrokes and put a massive sum on a player to win the 4th frame... ?

I think both he and his agent deserve what should be coming to them. Their lame excuses don't wash with me, and it just shows that those sort of people are always greedy for more money.
If his career is over, good riddence.

When they start to talk about how Higgins slice of the money will be paid he mentions he has property in Spain hinting at rather than talking money he would except property in foreign land.
Also telling the mafia where you can be found if this deal went t1ts up is not a good idea
His explanation saying he thought he was dealing with bad boys just doesn’t hold because as some have said this wasn’t the first meeting in this scam.

It was a nap this was going to happen eventually no one could baulk at that sort of money. Cue the people who say give him a break, another chance, wipe the slate clean and start again. Maybe he'll take a long rest before bouncing back. That feared russian mobster "Inoff the Red" has tried this before.

Actually I reckon snooker has become so boring the whole furore has been cooked up by Barry Hearn in order to get the game back in the headlines.

The first interesting thing to happen in snooker since Stephen Hendry was dropped off by Paul Hartley at A+E with half a snooker cue sticking out of his arse, and they ban him from the game.
Typical.

Pretty daft thing to do as he'll be raking in the cash as it is, still though Ronnie O'Sullivan is far more of a plonker.

Well it over now and there is no way back for both Mooney and Higgins and his 2009 title is under threat.
