The East of Scotland Shield, which in recent years has either been at Reserve or U19 level, will this year be played between Hibs & Hearts at U17 level. The game is scheduled for Easter Road on Monday 3 May with a 6pm ko. Hibs are the holders after the U19's won it last season to make it a treble alongside the League & Scottish Cup.

It is a real shame that the Old competition no longer has the attraction of the old days. My first two Derbies were at EoSS games at Easter Road before crowds of around 10,000.

The fixture was shunted around and the era of 4 league games per season killed off it being a 'First Team' match.

When did it stop being a proper competition and just become an Edinburgh derby?

I've got a limited set of details around the line ups , scorers and crowds.

See my next reply for more details.

I'll post up what I've got and also what is missing so if anyone can help fill in the blanks .

When did it stop being a proper competition and just become an Edinburgh derby?

It used to be THE ONLY competition in it's earlier guise as the EFA Cup and then the Shield.

The 5 games of 1878 established Hearts vs Hibs as the major match in the Capitol.

http://www.londonhearts.com/scores/history/1878EFACUP.htm

Hibs won the Cup 3 years in a row and kept the Cup. Which if I recall was (is?) on display in Easter Road after it was discovered in a church nearby.

The cup/shield was played over as many as 4 or 5 rounds. Both sides recorded big wins against the 'lesser' opponents'.

In its middle years it was effectively a knock out between Hearts, Hibs, Leith Athletic and St Bernards staged at season end.

In the 1950s and 1960s it became a straight derby. Introduction of new competitions meant it became
depricated. Meadowbank and Berwick joined in the 1970s.

Crowds diminished and the last first team match was around 1980.

A medal from the 1878 game.

I've grouped together EFA Cup and Shield games.

Here is a list of Hearts games (http://www.londonhearts.com/scores/str/eoss.html)in the 'Shield' .

I'll post what I have of Hibs results when I'm back home.

Also of note is this game Sat 12 Mar 1887 Edinburgh Shield Hearts 0 Hibernian 3 (http://www.londonhearts.com/scores/games/18870312.html)

Which was game 2 in Hibs 'Annus Mirabilis' of 1887 vs Hearts.

hopefully it will be a good ending to a disappointing season for the lads, many of them have been playing regularly with the under 19s this season.

I remember one of the last games featuring 1st team players, in 1978 , it was an end of season game - 1-0 to us at ER, Gerry O'Brien scored. Could well have been the game where that odious dirty bassa Drew Busby got sent off for snapping Bobby Smith's shinpad then doing Arthur Duncan's leg some serious damage.

Then followed some carnage up Easter Road and the surrounding streets, horrible stuff.

Given it is the holiday Monday we could get a reasonable crowd for this.
