I was reading about Portsmouth Debt being £120m and that this is made even more ludicrous given the fact that all Money raised by the league for TV etc, is split evenly to all 20 clubs, meaning that they receive the same as Man Utd / Chelsea etc. Therfore their situation is their own fault. (Goes without saying anyway).

Does anyone know how the SPL TV money is split?

I would like to think that its evenly split but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that it favours a certain 2 clubs.

Also when it comes to prize money, obvioulsy a club would earn more for finishing top than a club finishing 12 or 11th would, but how is the prize money funded? Is this TV money and this is how the SPL get round favouring the OF?

And if anyone knows what the Prize money is for each position I'd be interested to know too.

I don't have figures to hand but the SPL is very heavily loaded towards the top two positions in the league (surprise!). If I recall correctly the top spot gets approx 17% of total revenue, small step down to second place, then much larger drops after third place with the bottom club getting approx 4%.

By contrast in the EPL the top club got around double the percentage of the bottom club (about 4 times the percentage in the SPL).

In both leagues there is a proportion of TV money split evenly, then another proportion split based on league position. Only in the SPL it chooses to heavily favour the top two places. No-one to blame for this but the club chairmen as they all agreed to this not just the OF. A great chance was missed a few years ago when the ten other clubs came close to resigning but it was all undone by clubs who were concerned about being relegated who then dropped out of the "rebel" group of ten. In turn the OF voted against promotion that year on some spurious ground for the club coming up from the 1st.

Apologies for not having more detailed figures above.

Hibbyradge will be along with the figures soon but from memory, the above is spot on.

thanks for that!
It's ridiculous but not at all suprising.
Another great example of why the spl/sfa/scottish football needs a major shake up!
There has been plenty of talk of change but it needs someone/some club to take lead and no doubt the rest of the 10 will follow! Its to late to change things for next season so waiting till all european/relegation positions have been sorted, then get everyone round the table and get it agreed for season 11/12

No matter what some say, scottish football is in a terrible state

Any inequalities in the way the SPL treat the clubs is down to the non-OF clubs having no balls to stand en masse against the OF.

For 2009/10 season, the £13m tv money has been split as follows:-

Septic & Rankers - £4.5m each
All Other Teams - £400,000 each

Great eh!?! :grr:

Also, an old post of Mr Radge's:-

I read a lot of posts which suggest that TV money etc is unfairly weighted in favour of the Old Firm.

A year ago, I wrote to the SPL to ask for clarification and received a detailed reply from David Ogilvie, the SPL Operations Administrator. (I can email it to anyone who is interested.)

The SPL rules dictate that all commercial revenues are pooled and split 48% equally and 52% by league position.

In total, the winners receive 17%, the runners up get 15% and the third placed team gets 9.5%.

4th 8.5%
5th 8.0%
6th 7.5%

and so on until 12th place which is allocated 4.5%.

When the Yams were second, they recived 15% of all SPL commercial revenue. Rangers received 9.5%.

I'm pretty sure that that comment was around the foreign TV rights and does not include the existing TV money generated from selling to SKY and ESPN which will make up the majority of the TV income

That's not entirely true. 50% of the income is split evenly between the teams, with 25% based on final league position and 25% based on how often they're live on the TV. The big teams still get the lions share of the three year deal in place from 2007-2010.

For example:

Television revenue for 2007-08 season
(2006-07 in brackets)
Manchester United £49.3m (£32m)
Chelsea £45.6m (£30.9m)
Arsenal £47m (£29m)
Liverpool £45.4m (£28.4m)
Everton £42.1m (£25.3m)
Aston Villa £42.3m (£22m)
Blackburn Rovers £40.2m (£22m)
Portsmouth £40.4m (£23m)
Manchester City £39.7m (£21m)
West Ham United £36.8m (£21.1m)
Tottenham Hotspur £36m (£27.3m)
Newcastle United £39.2m (£21.2m)
Middlesbrough £34.2m (£20.5m)
Wigan Athletic £33.4m (£18.4m)
Sunderland £33.6m (£6.5m*)
Bolton Wanderers £32m (£24.6m)
Fulham £31.3m (£20.4m)
Reading £30.6m (£23.6m)
Birmingham City £29.8m (£6.5m*)
Derby County £29.1m (n/a)

Total £815,175,812 (£502,533,570)

The logic of splitting half the pot equally and then awarding the rest based on league position seems a fair approach to me.

with the ugly sisters taking 32 percent of the 52 between them? Seems unfair!

Absolutely ludicrous given that they're no bigger a club than the likes of Hibs, Hearts, Aberdeen. What a shame for their creditors - I predict a plumet down the leagues for them.
They make the Yams look like a well run club

Both Celtic & Rangers have always had the lions share of the TV money (over 50%) with the rest going to the other clubs to share evenly.
If I remember rightly, i think that's why Sky pulled the plug in Scotland because the old firm DEMANDED even more , plus at the same at time Celtic and Rangers were going to charge the press for taking match-day photos at Parkhead & Ibrox.

That is only because they finish 1st and 2nd. As pointed out the year the Yams split them they received significantly more than Rangers. However much we dislike it you have to reward performance and the best measure of that is league placements.

so it goes 17 to 15 then drops to 9.5? Gives them an advantage for following season plus the champs league money.

I don't think the above is the case. The below link to the SPL gives the percentage split.

SPL Website (http://www.scotprem.com/content/default.asp?page=s2&newsid=7618&back=home)

Given that for years the OF were then making massive rewards from a CL place (or now a Europa League place) it seems a bit wrong to me to load the percentages so heavily in their favour as well. As someone else said, we just need the 10 clubs to show some balls and stand up to the bigots.

Why? You could use tv money to try to even out future performance, as is done in major sport in North America.

So would we be looking at draft systems? Franchises? Players registrations being with the league rather than the clubs? Turkeys voting for Xmas?

The player registrations one is an interesting concept. In theory it sounds very fair, bottom club getting first pick of the young players coming through etc but that wouldn't really work here be cause are you going to bring a player through your academy for them to be plucked off you by another team as their 'reward' for finishing last? It works there because of the collegiate set-up but that's not going to happen here is it? Also, in practice does it not happen that the teams with money just end up trading off money/multiple picks for these first draft players immediately thereafter anyway?
