A senior Iranian cleric says women who wear revealing clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes.
Iran (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/iran) is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, and the cleric's unusual explanation for why the earth shakes follows a prediction by the president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/mahmoud-ahmadinejad), that a quake is certain to hit Tehran and that many of its 12 million inhabitants should relocate.
"Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which increases earthquakes," Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media.
Women in the Islamic Republic are required by law to cover from head to toe, but many, especially the young, ignore some of the more strict codes and wear tight coats and scarves pulled back that show much of the hair. "What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble?" Sedighi asked during a prayer sermon last week. "There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes."
Seismologists have warned for at least two decades that it is likely the sprawling capital will be struck by a catastrophic quake in the near future. Some experts have even suggested Iran should move its capital to a less seismically active location. Tehran straddles scores of fault lines, including one more than 50 miles long, though it has not suffered a major quake since 1830

Thanks for the warning. I'm keeping clear of the George Street in future.

These strict over exagerated moral codes of law in Islamic countries makes them a bit of a laughing stock to people in the west. To state something like this is quite rediculous and shows they are still living by laws more suited to the 12th century rather than the 21st.

Are you saying its not true?
In my humble opinion its senior Iranian clerics who actually cause earthquakes.
This is based on the same evidence as Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi has available.

Immodestly dressed young women leading young men astray? Lucky barstewards! :greengrin
The important thing to remember is to interpret this in the relevant context. I've just finished an essay on whether or not western countries can legitimately raise human rights concerns in other states and in that I made the point that it's easy for us as "westerners" (for the most part, I don't want to generalise EVERY .netter as a westerner) to think this is really bizarre, but if we look at it from the Iranian point of view, this is what they believe, this is what they've believed for a long time, and the last time anyone tried to bring Iran into the 20th century as it was, the Ayatollah refused to let it happen. There are probably some people in Iran who, because of their beliefs, find it shocking that women are bucking the religious trends and almost taking influences from the west - which is one of the things they're trying to avoid - but the western view is that as an opinion, it's hard for us to comprehend something like that.
Hopefully that made some sense.

What amazes me is that there will be millions, maybe hundreds of millions or even one billion plus people that will believe this *****.
The way that these people use their religion to try and control people and keep them in the stone age is crazy, and it won't end anytime soon.
Whilst watching some documentry videos I was amazed that in parts of america there are people who are scared to say that they don't believe in god for fear of the repurcussions. I suspect that is the same in Muslim countries.
Are there any stats on atheists in Muslim countries and how do they compare with western countries?

Dont know about that, the below link gives atheism % by country but doesnt 'do' Islam seemingly... (look at USA, 3-9%) compared to Sweden

From what ive seen/read about Iran its a surprisingly modern, liberal society in the big cities, very cosmopolitan young population, cutting edge art, film, music etc. Its the rural areas and in the clerical arm of the Govt where you get the puritan attitudes.

Thank god you would never hear anything like that in a civilized christian country in the west.

No one said that they didn't.
I was curious to find out how peoples freedom to challenge this type of bollocks exists by guaging the amount of people who are able to declare themselves atheist.
In countries where it is acceptable to state that you don't believe in god, I would reckon that it would be more plausible for them to challenge ridiculous religious viewpoints such as this.
IIRC, the idiot you have quoted has been widely laughed at and condemned in the western world.
Has that applied in Iran? I genuinely don't know. As another poster has said, Iran appears to be a lot more liberal and modern that is made out by our media so maybe they do think this guy is a blitering idiot.
Why is it when people such as this are critised it almost always turns back to 'well look at this idiot and he lives in the west and is Christian' (I believe his viewpoints were also discussed on the Haiti thread).

I wasn't responding to the original post. I just felt like posting the Pat Robertson thing as it amuses me.

You're right, by all accounts, about Iran. But "the clerical arm of the Govt". There's another arm? Probably one without a hand.

I agree.
The middle eastern politicians, news readers and spokespersons are continually being misinterpreted and ridiculed in the West.
The Iran cleric was trying to say that we should use religion as a response to these disasters. Within religion comes the point about the way woman dress.
Who said Western democracy was a good thing! :grr: :panic:
