Scottish teams don't enter until the 2nd qualifying round.

Assuming we finish 4th, it means that we'll probably start our Europa League campaign on July 15th.

Unless, of course, Ross County or Raith Rovers are losing finalists against either Celtic or Dundee Utd, which would mean that we will start on July 29th, if we finish 4th.

If Celtic play Dundee Utd in the final, it would mean that 5th place will get into Europe. In that case, 3rd would enter at the play off round stage (August 19th and 26th), 4th would enter at the 3rd qualifying round stage (July 29th and August 5th) and 5th would enter at the 2nd qualifying round stage (July 15th and 22nd).

In terms of whoever finishes 4th, the outcome is the same whether Celtic play Dundee Utd in the final or Ross County/Raith Rovers play Celtic/Dundee Utd. The only team that would benefit more from the former outcome rather than latter would be the 5th placed team in the SPL. If Ross County or Raith Rovers get to the cup final, 5th place won't be in Europe.

Clear as mud? :cool2:

Yep. If, for argument's sake, Ross County play Dundee Utd in the final, if Dundee Utd win the cup then Ross County would enter the Europa League at the 2nd qualifying round stage and Dundee Utd would enter at the play off round stage.

However, if Ross County were to beat Dundee Utd then Ross County would enter at the play off stage and Dundee Utd would enter at the third qualifying round stage.

Can't agree with you there FH.

If Dundee Utd win the Cup they take the role of Scottish Cup entrants which puts them into the round before the group stages, Ross County wouldn't qualify at all.

The only way runners up get in is if the winners are in the top two in the league.

Fair enough, if that is the case then I stand corrected. I'm not doubting you in the slightest but could you point me to somewhere that states the rules on this issue?

By the way, you're assuming that Dundee Utd won't finish in 2nd!

I'll try and find it, although not an easy task.

Good point regarding Dundee Utd finishing second.
