How did you go about it?

Did you use a lawyer or an online firm?

Its easy. took about 3 weeks for the official documents to come through. The timeconsuming bit is informing everyone (bank, passport, pension, insurance etc)

This site (http://www.nationaldeedpollservices.org.uk/?gclid=CKym7Nvl56ACFROElAodNRe2GQ)is much cheaper.

I was always under the impression that deed polls did not exist, under Scots law.

Nope, although it sounds like its a common misconception...

Q17: I was born and live in Scotland and have been told that I cannot change my name by Deed Poll because the name change procedure is different in Scotland. Is this correct?
A: You have been wrongly advised. Although a Deed Poll is an English legal document, it is recognised by all UK government departments, companies and organisations. Therefore, you will not experience any problems getting all your documents and records changed to your new name (including your passport, driving licence, medical records etc). We issue hundreds of Deed Polls to Scottish residents every year and we have never had any problems reported by clients when getting their documents and records changed.

In any case, my wife was born in England and needs the document to change her name at the registry office.

Or something like that.

I was told on the PM board that to change your name all you had to do was ask an admin nicely

I work in a large office and we tend to see the odd random name.

Some guy has changed his name to McLovin :greengrin

These people are pretty good too, they even have an explanatory video presented by Michael Buerk

UK Deed Poll Service (http://www.ukdps.co.uk/)

£33 per name change and that is per incidence, e.g if your name is John Hughes and you want to change it to John Yogi Hughes then that will cost £33. I you want to change it to Sean Yogi O'Hughes then it is still just £33 if you change all the bits at once.

A guy I worked with years back changed his name at least twice, although no-one was ever quite sure why :cool2:

:agree: Correct. Although I'm not sure what the situation would be with Mrs Radge being English

:bitchy: Incorrect. Of course this company are going to tell you that, so they can get money out of you. When I wanted to change my name, I checked with my solicitor and as previously stated, under Scots Law, you can change your name to whatever you want (within reason). I've changed the majority of things with a declaration includingmy driving licence and bank accounts.

What the company says there is true, though.

Sorry D, I didn't actually mean what they were saying was wrong. They just make it sound like you need a deed poll in Scotland when you don't. Anything to get money out of people IMO.

Change your name, inform all the people you need to companies etc and no need to pay for officially doing it by English deed poll.

My wife wants her maiden name to be her middle name and change her surname to mine.

This requires a deed poll, even in Scotland.

From the Direct Gov site:

The supporting documents
IPS needs to see evidence of all your name changes. You must send original documents, not copies. IPS will accept laminated documents as proof of name changes.

You will need to send:

completed application form
your current or last passport
two recent, identical photographs
and supporting documents as detailed below.
If you are waiting to get married or form a civil partnership
IPS needs form PD2, 'Passports for Newly Weds and Civil Partners'. For information about this form and how to get it, follow the link below.

About name changes and passports If you have already changed your name
IPS will need to see documents showing the date of and reason for the name change.

If you have changed your name more than once IPS will need to see evidence of all changes. The documents must show a clear link between each change of name.

Marriage and civil partnership name changes
For married people, IPS will need to see marriage certificates.

For civil partners, IPS will need to see civil partnership certificates.

Going back to your maiden or unmarried name
If you have gone back to your maiden or unmarried name, IPS will need to see:

your birth certificate
a signed statement from you saying that you have gone back to your maiden name for all purposes
proof of the history of names (a decree absolute showing both names, a marriage certificate showing both names or a formal name change document)
Name changes connected with gender re-assignment
If you want to change the name in your passport because you have changed gender, IPS needs to see your change of name deed and one of the following:

a letter from your doctor stating that they expect your change of gender to be permanent
a gender recognition certificate
a new birth certificate
Name changes by deed poll

In all other cases IPS needs to see your change of name deed.

Haven't done it myself but in one office I worked in there was a Phil Dick, Ronnie Dick and Alec Dick, none of whom were related. Someone phoned up asking for a Mr Dick to be met with the immortal reply "there are a few Dicks in this office, which one are you wanting to speak to?".

One of the Dicks met a lovely girl called Joyce who amazingly didn't want to change her name to Dick when they married so Mr Dick changed his surname to hers. Spoilsport :greengrin

You couldnae make it up!

But that's from the national government website. And for 'national' read .:greengrin Don't see Scotland mentioned there at all.

I would definitely check with a solicitor first, they will keep you right. Don't see the point in stumping up for a deed poll if you don't need one.
