View Full Version : Soft spot for an english team poll

I saw a post before that said most people who had an english team who they had a soft spot for (or saw as a second team were glory hunters). I always have a soft spot for areas I have lived in so carlisle would be my english team. I just wanted to see if it was true that the vast majority have one of the "big four" as a second team. So if you like an english team who are they?

I usually keep an eye out for the Spurs results having lived in the 'nam (that's Tott'nam to the uninitiated) for a few years and been an occasional visitor to White Hart Lane.

Like the poster above I also tend to keep an eye on the Scottish contingent, meaning the likes of Brum and Burnley get a wee bit more attention as well.

Saw Liverpool on MotD in the mid-70s playing a style of football hitherto unwitnessed and was smitten. Keegam, Toshack, Callaghan, Heighway et-al were a joy to watch. I was only 6 or 7 so it wasn't about glory hunting, I just liked them.
Now I'm no really fussed. I enjoy the English game but it doesn't get the old juices flowing and while nominally still have a wee place for Liverpool, since the Souness managerial tenure, disaffection has pretty much taken up permanent residence.

Started following Chelsea back in the day when the EPL was getting popular when I was in High School and everyone else was following Man Utd and Liverpool. When Ruud Gullit started playing for them I was hooked and have been down to a few games at the bridge as well as "borrowing" my Uncle's season ticket when they play at St James' Park (not been so good this season for a trip to see the Blues at the toon tho:devil:)

Went through years and years of mediocrity before they got really good, remeber the year they won the Cup Winners Cup with Jonathen Pearce on Channel 5 commentary screaming "RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRobertoo Diiiiiiiiiiii Mateaooooooooooooooooooooo". Still got an away kit from that season with "Vialli 9" on the back in size medium that I sometimes still like to think I can fit into, very nearly a surgical operation to get me out of it again.

Also have a slight soft spot for Everton, they are a proper TEAM without any real star player and think Davie Moyes is a cracking manager.

i have two:

forest green rovers - for some bizarre reason, i've been to a couple of games, including the one where they were promoted to the conference. will never forget: 'conference, here we come, conference conference here we come'

surreal.

barnet - always used to go them on champ man, somehow attached to them.

and kinda also blackburn, my grandad's father and brother played for them...though i can't stand allardyce.

First and foremost, Southport FC, who are pushing for promotion to the Football Conference...my dad grew up there for a while and is pretty daft about them and passed on the torch.

In the EPL, Everton. Got my gran to blame for that one, her dad took her to see Dixie Dean score his record winning goal at Goodison, and I just think they're great. Lot of respect for Moyes as well as most of the players.

Incidentally, I'm wanting Arsenal to win the title this year, as I can't stand Man Utd or Chelsea.

I was on the stadium tour last summer and prior to showing a video, Billy went round everybody in the room asking if they had a favourite English team. The surprising result was Everton had more backing than anybody else! Due to a close friends influence - Everton for me as well.

^^^^ Good lad ^^^^.

I support a well supported (by Scottish standards) team from the east end of the capital city (the more working class cide of the city). My team has the potential to be big and successful but has consistently underachieved since god was a boy. My team has good passionate supporters, although they also had a bad reputation back in the day. My team has a neighbouring club that thinks it's massive as a result of their constant overspending for the rare chance of success, but everyone laughs at them for being deluded idiots. My club has a (debatable) repuation for playing good football and bringing through top class youngsters, who always end up playing at a higher level for rival clubs.

Basically, it's not too hard to work out why West Ham appeal to me, unfortunately though I've never been. Me and my brother were going to get some transport down for a West Ham game this year but it was too expensive and we wouldn't have been able to get back that night, it was Millwall in the cup! Some first game that would've been, this sounds terrible but after seeing the scenes I'd still have liked to have gone.

Supported Manchester United as a kid and went to see them play Chelsea at Old Trafford, but thankfully I realised how stupid it was for someone from Edinburgh to call themselves a United "fan", and grew out of it.

30-03-2010, 03:22 AM
Oh yeah and Everton I also like. The reason for this is that when my dad was living in Liverpool me and my brother went down to Anfield one summers day to do the stadium tour. The place was swarming with Japanese tourists and when we asked about the tour they said it was booked up for a week and it was some ridiculously expensive price.

We took the advice of some friendly old geezer we got talking to on the bus on the way down and went to Goodison instead. Now in all honesty Goodison Park is a bit of a dump but it was such a contrast to Anfield in the way that when we got there the staff asked us where we were from, had a chat and let us walk around Goodison Park for free! Everton fans must hate the media wankathon over Liverpool, they're a much more genuine club imo.

Watching an FA cup final as a kid i wanted to support an english team so i decided whoever won i would follow.

It was Man U v Crystal Palace and it was a draw sure it went to a replay or at least ET. Great game and Man U ended up winning, had CP id have been happy to follow them. For me, its Arsenal, and not only because of their recent style of football.

When I first started getting into football, I was "that kid" who was happy to go in goals. At the time, the best (debateably) and most distinctively moustachiod (not up for debate) goalkeeper in the world was David "Pornstar" Seaman, so I took a liking to Arsenal.

Then grew to appreciate "The Back 4" and the history of the club - Herbert Chapman etc.

Still not a patch on how I feel for Hibs, but not glory hunting either, cos apart from the odd foray into the Cup Winners Cup (Nayim, you b*astard :boo hoo::grr:) Arsenal in the early 1990's weren't up to much apart from holding and Indian sign over Sheff Wed in cup finals!!

Played golf every day for 2 months in Sardinia during the summer of '98 with Franco Zola and a few rounds with Luca Vialli. Went out for meals at night and even had a kickabout on the beach on an island, just off Sardinia, with them both on a day trip. Went to Zolas house for a spot of lunch a couple of times aswell while there and had a kickabout in the garden with him and the kids. My wife went away shopping with his wife while we played golf.

Went down to the bridge a few times as their guests so followed them since.

Great times.

Theres a few teams I look out for. I was taken to a couple of Oxford utd games probably around 10 years ago by family down there and I like to see them do well. I keep an eye out for Everton, as my girlfriend supports them and she likewise looks out for the Hibs. More recently, I've been to see Tranmere Rovers a few times as its the only team near here I can really afford to go see, and I've been enjoying that. Up until very recently, I always quite enjoyed seeing Liverpool lose, as they've just seemed a bit tim-ish to me, but I got a free ticket to the Kop the other week and some of my best friends are very attached to them, so I'm remaining neutral on them for now.

Man U.

I only really started to get into football and play 11s at the start of the 99 season when I was about 12. I watched every game that was on STV through the campaign and was going crazy when Man U scored the equaliser and even more so when they scored the winner. So much so that my mum thought there was something wrong with me and came rushing up the stairs. :faf:

I had been to Hibs games with my grandad prior to that but was never really interested in watching or playing football until the start of that season. I'd collected the SPL sticker books like everyone else but never really seen any games, probably due to my granda not being able to afford to take me to ER every week.

I had the Man U bed covers, bin, curtains, the works. :faf:

You could maybe say that I was a Man U fan before I was a proper Hibs fan as I'd been to OT almost as many times as I'd been to ER by the time I was 13/14. :duck:

Although supporting may be a bit far, now I don't care if they win but would rather they did, especially over Chelsea. Also enjoy watching them in the CL.

Fulham - there was a point (2 years ago) where there were 4 USA internationals playing for them, so I kept my eye out for them - in terms of "supporting" the club though? Nah - I just liked to see the players doing well. It's a wee bit harder in the case of Maurice Edu and DaMarcus Beasely, but seeing as the league is over, I don't mind watching them play well ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Strangely, I have 2 other Scottish teams I also have a soft spot for - Livingston and Dundee United.

Livingston - my dad was involved in the development of the stadium and as such, we started following them from the 3rd division - I grew a little disillusioned during the Flynn/Massone era (due to all the baggage which followed them) but I've been to see them a couple of times this season and the football they're playing this season is brilliant (granted they're a big fish in a very wee pond, but they horsed a 2nd division team 7-1 and ran Dundee VERY close).

Dundee/United - this is a hard one to acknowledge, but having lived in the city for the past 6 years, I do like to see them (both Dundee clubs actually) doing well! One of my flatmates in first year as an undergrad was an Arab and he coaxed me into getting a ST at Tannadice for a season - was only £95 for the year. I'd never cheer on them when they were playing Hibs or Livi, but I don't mind seeing them doing so well - if anyone is going to beat us to third (though I'd really rather nobody did) I'd be content if it was United.

I have two- Everton and Brentford

Always had a big soft spot for Everton since they beat Spurs 4-1 in the 95 FA Cup semi and have been hooked since, especially as they have had a number of Scottish connections.

Adopted Brentford as we used to go down to London while at uni and they were the only team we could afford to see. Proper old school family club with a cracking passionate support, who get behind the team win, lose or draw always a great atmosphere. (could we learn something from them!?)

I happily watch MOTD but don't support any English team. My support will go to any team that has more Scottish players than the others or ones with a Scottish manager. Once those players or manager leave, I couldn't care less about them again.

I can see why people with family connections or who have lived, or do live, in England support English teams but I don't and haven't.

First English game I ever went to was QPR v Newcastle in the mid 80's.

I watched a Gascoigne inspired Geordie team rip QPR apart in the first half to go 4-0 up.

I was there with my QPR supporting cousin and he was almost in tears :greengrin

He was in a much better mood by the end though as it finished 5-5

It was quite an introduction to football down south and I have always looked out for QPR results since then.

Not guaranteed to get there when you look at the quality teams in the running, like the mighty Bradford Park Avenue who play in Hibs colours.

Wasn't a great lover of the Dons although went to see them a couple of times at Pough lane when they were still Southern League. Having said that I was very unhappy at what happened to that club football clubs should never be allowed to become franchises like in American football, so will be pleased for the fans if AFC Wimbledon do make it back into the fooball league.

I've been a Blackburn man ever since they played at Easter Road in the 90s - IIRC it was just after Shearer had signed and we all sang "what a waster of money" as Hibs won 3-0 :greengrin

I was at that game too sitting in the old North stand with the Wooden benches.

Another apt memory from that stand (ahead of tonight) was when we played Dundee United and were 2-0 down with about half an hour left. Hibs scored what I thought was a consolation goal, so wasn't that fussed by it when a girl about the same age as me said "erm, you're supposed to cheer!!!" so I said, "I'll cheer when the 3rd goes in".

Final score: Hibs 3 United 2.

I have 2.

The first one is Man Utd and it is the entirely the fault of Peter Scmeichel and Alex Miller. The only position i ever wanted to play was goalkeeper, unlike most keepers who are frustrated strikers. And whilst i spoiled with Hibs goallies in my youth having watched Rough, Goram, leighton and Burridge, Schmeichel was THE goalkeeper. Brave, athletic, agile and despite not being technically brilliant all the time he had a presence and an ability to get something in the way of the ball.

I blame Alex Miller because he was the manager when i first got into football at about age 4 or so. I actually rarely watched anyone other than Hibs or Scotland so just assumed that football was played that way by everyone. Then i watched Man Utd beat Man City 5-0 with a kanchelskis hat trick and was hooked. The United teams of the 90s played unbelievable football. They could go from defending to scoring in literally 10 seconds. I can still rattle the early and late 90s United teams off just as easily as any Hibs side. Early 90s: Schmeichel, Parker, Pallister, Bruce, Irwin, Kanchelskis, Ince, Keane, Giggs, Hughes, Cantona. Late 90s: Scmeichel, Neville, Stam, Johnsen, Irwin, Beckham, Scholes, Keane, Giggs, Yorke, Cole.

I'm sure at the time that there was an element of glory hunting involved but i don't think choosing an English team at 5 or 6 years old can really be called gloryhunting especially as i have stuck with them ever since even through the odd trophyless season.

My secong English team is Bournemouth, always had a soft spot for them and even donated a fair few quid and signed a few petitions when they looked like going out of business. This one is definittely not gloryhunting in any way.

I have soft spots for lots of English teams for various reasons however...

Growing up and first getting into football in the mid-eighties everyone was either Liverpool or Everton and a few wierdos liked Man United (they weren't very good back then).
Not having much of a clue I chose Oxford United as my English team. They were in the top flight, had a great team, won the league cup, played in exactly the same strip as my primary school team and sounded a lot like it too....How could I go wrong?

Still look out for them to this day and hope they rise to the giddy heights again. Doubt it though.
