I'm sure the Catalan/Spain thing carries a fair amount of sectarianism. The Barca and Madrid folk really hate each other. The only difference is that the away team only gets a handful of tickets which means, unlike the Glasgow derby, there's not 8000 away fans at La Classico therfor the haterd isn't as obvious.

Some would argue it's worse there. The secterianism that is - not the football.

There is reasons that there the only 2 teams up there.Valencia are probably the 3rd best team and they would be up there if they didnt have 300m dept, and sevilla would be if they didnt have to sell players like dani alves and sergio ramos.

Hearts would be up there in Scotland if they didn't have £40m debt and Hibs would be if they didn't have to sell players like Garry O'Connor, Scott Brown, Steven Whittaker, Kevin Thomson, Steven Fletcher, Rob Jones, Ivan Sproule, Amadou Konte and Alan O'Brien.

It's absolutely brutal at times. The Barca fans loathe Real Madrid with a passion. Without over simplifying matters, there was always a rivalry but during the Franco regime when the flying of the Catalunyan flag was banned and any discussion of autonomy or independence was punishable by torture, FC Barcelona became a cause for the people of catalunya to rally around. There is footage on youtube of a game between Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou just after Francos' death and the atmosphere is electric, flares and fireworks being set off, flags everywhere, Barca won the game and there was a party for about the next month in Barcelona.

For all they are a massive club Barca are still very much at the heart of the community. They are owned by the fans and elect their president every 4 years. They still sell cheap season tickets and cheap match day tickets to allow less wealthy fans to go see them. They have many charitable institutions in place including the UNICEF logo on their strips as opposed to corporate sponsorship.

Real Madrid on the other hand are the Rangers of Spain. The establishment team with the dodgy referees, Spanish FA and politicians desperate to keep them ahead of Barcelona. There has long been rumours in Spain of government bail outs in the late 90s and early 00s to keep the club from going into administration.

When they played Celtic at Parkhead in 2004 Barcelona fans interrupted minutes silence for those who died in Madrid bombings with a chant meaning those from Madrid are illegitimate. Media here were foaming at mouth for a day or so but I understand it received little attention in the Spain press - did seem abit hypocritical that Rangers fans got pulled up 2 years later for the Hello Hello chant but no action was taking against Barcelona - it surely could not be because they were in G14 and from a larger country?

Good point from frazer bob about away tickets, I understand Madrid fans genuinely fear for their safety in Catalonia while few Old Firm fans genuinely fear going to Parkhead or Ibrox and usually there is high demand for their 8000 or so tickets. There are obviously incidents on days of OF games but at least in Scotland I do not think many genuinely fear being attacked when going to the away ground.

But despite the above I would love to go to a Classico game, like the OF the hatred can actually give such games greater attraction.

Rangers are from a country in the G14 which has a larger population than Spain.

I don't understand why an English publication is acting so pious over this. The English league title race is usually a dull affair and, this year aside obviously, is more often that not won by this point in the year.
La Liga AND the SPL have gone to the wire on many more occasions than the Premiership - not only that, the reporter goes on to state that some of these clubs' debts are into the hundreds of millions.

Ergo, shouldn't the title read "Domination by few and mass overspending is rendering La Liga the new Premiership"?

Amadou Konte and Alan O'Brien.

:faf:

The racism, violence etc.. in Spain is a lot worse than anything in Scotland including rangers and celtic.

Because the EPL is the greatest league ever etc etc. Only little leagues like Spain and Scotland are won by two teams etc etc :jamboak:

Excepting this year where 3 teams could win the EPL it is usually just two teams who have the chance with the other two making up the "big four" CL spots.

Barca, madrid, valencia etc are all in debt but all of englands big four are too
